System 32 (Line Boring) — Definition & Standard Dimensions in Cabinet Making
System 32 is an international design standard in furniture construction based on a continuous line of holes drilled at exact 32 mm intervals. It is used for the standardised installation of furniture fittings such as hinges, shelf supports, and drawer runners within cabinet carcasses.
What exactly is System 32?
System 32 forms the structural backbone of modern cabinet making. Much like the grid on graph paper, the line of holes tells the fitter and joiner exactly where components must be fixed inside the carcass. Developed in the post-war era, this standard was designed to simplify industrial cabinet production and ensure fittings are interchangeable across different manufacturers.
Almost every furniture fitting—from the mounting plate of a concealed hinge to the cabinet profile of drawer systems—is engineered so that its fixing holes are spaced in multiples of 32 mm. This completely eliminates the need for bespoke measurements for every individual component.
Dimensions and Standards of the Hole Line
Adhering strictly to precise dimensions is essential for smooth hardware compatibility. The following standard values define System 32 in the workshop:
- Grid dimension (hole pitch): Exactly 32 mm centre-to-centre along the vertical axis.
- Hole diameter: Standardly 5 mm. This size is perfectly matched to standardised shelf supports and Euro screws. Less commonly, a 3 mm diameter is used as a pilot hole for traditional wood screws.
- Front setback: The distance from the front inner edge of the carcass to the centre of the first line of holes is 37 mm. This is the standard setback for overlay doors.
- Rear setback: The distance between the front and rear hole lines is always a multiple of 32 mm (for example 192 mm, 224 mm, or 288 mm), depending on the length of the cabinet runner.
- Drilling depth: In standard 19 mm thick chipboard, blind holes are typically drilled to a depth of 13 mm to 15 mm to ensure they never break through the external face of the cabinet.
Application & Selection in Furniture Making
The standardised line of holes allows for highly flexible interior layouts. Shelves can be adjusted in height at any time in 32 mm increments simply by repositioning the shelf supports.
The grid spacing is particularly crucial when mounting moving components. When installing a drawer system, the fixing screws of the cabinet runner engage directly with the pre-drilled holes. Whether you are using a heavy-duty full extension runner with high load capacity or a simple single extension runner, the runner's hole pattern is always aligned with the 32 mm grid. The first screw is fixed at the front setback of 37 mm, with subsequent screws following the grid pattern.
This standard is equally ubiquitous in kitchen fitting. Specialist pull-out systems for larder units or integrated waste systems utilise the existing carcass drillings. The installer does not need to mark out bespoke measurements, but simply aligns the fittings with the line of holes and fastens them. Even complex drawer systems can thus be installed completely level, parallel, and distortion-free without requiring elaborate measuring tools.

To add a precise line of holes retrospectively to chipboard or MDF, a joiner requires dedicated tools:
- Drilling jig: A guide rail featuring hardened drill bushings spaced at exact 32 mm intervals.
- System drill bit: A 5 mm fitting drill bit with a centre point and scoring spurs for clean, tear-free holes in melamine faces.
- Depth stop: A collar fixed to the drill bit that mechanically restricts the drilling depth to a maximum of 15 mm.
