T-Bar vs. Bridge vs. Bow Handles: Handle Types Explained

A T-bar handle is characterised by ends that extend beyond its mounting pillars, whereas a bridge handle ends flush with the pillars, and a bow handle features a continuous curved, arch-like structure. All three handle types are used to open furniture fronts and are based on standardised hole centres.

What exactly are T-bar handles, bridge handles, and bow handles?

When planning furniture fronts, installers and joiners are often faced with choosing the right handle geometry. The distinction between the three most common types lies in their design:

  • T-bar handle: This handle consists of a cylindrical or square bar that rests on two pillars (feet). The defining feature is that the handle bar extends to the left and right beyond the mounting pillars.
  • Bridge handle: Constructed similarly to a T-bar handle, but the ends of the bar finish exactly flush with the mounting pillars. There is no overhang. Bridge handles frequently feature an exact 90° angle.
  • Bow handle: This handle is made from a single continuous piece of material bent into an arch (U-shape or gentle curve). The ends of the arch transition directly into the contact surface on the furniture front.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values

In the furniture industry, fittings adhere to strict standards to ensure compatibility. The most critical measurement during selection is the hole centre distance (CC), which is the distance between the centres of the two drilled holes.

In Europe, this distance is based on System 32, a standardised series of holes where the distances are always multiples of 32 mm. Common modular sizes for installation include:

  • Furniture handles 160mm
  • Furniture handles 192mm
  • Furniture handles 256mm

Fixing is carried out almost exclusively using a metric thread of size M4. The handle thicknesses (diameter of the bar) usually vary between 10 mm and 14 mm, depending on load requirements.

Use and selection

The choice of handle type depends on mechanical load and the location of use. A T-bar handle offers a generous gripping surface thanks to the overhanging ends and is frequently used on heavy pull-outs. A bow handle is ergonomically advantageous as there are no protruding edges to catch on.

For heavily used areas, robust furniture handles stainless steel are ideal. These are corrosion-resistant and easy to clean. When outfitting cooking areas exposed to grease splatters and moisture, specific furniture handles kitchen made of solid material are often chosen.

Fitting a handle is like setting dowel pins in woodworking: absolute precision during marking and drilling is imperative, as even a deviation of 1.5 mm in hole centre distance can cause tension in the furniture handle. Using a drilling template is always recommended for exact positioning.
