T-Bar Handles vs Bar Handles: Furniture Hardware Terminology

A T-bar handle (reling handle) is a cylindrical furniture handle whose bar extends beyond the side mounting bases, whereas a bar handle often finishes flush with the bases or is crafted from solid angular material. Both fittings are based on System 32 and are used to open cabinet and drawer fronts.

What are T-bar handles and bar handles exactly?

Technically speaking, both terms describe surface-mounted fittings for furniture fronts. In terms of construction, the principle follows that of a classic staircase handrail: a central handle bar is held at a distance from the furniture front by two or more bases (legs).

The classic T-bar handle consists of a hollow or solid round tube. The ends of the tube project past the mounting points on the left and right. In contrast, bar handle is an umbrella term that also includes profiles where the ends transition into the bases at an exact right angle (U-shape) or are milled from square solid material. Both variants feature an internal thread inside the bases, usually for metric M4 screws, to secure the fitting from the back of the front panel.

Types and variants

In joinery, the distinction between handle types is primarily made via the cross-section, material, and surface finish:

  • Round tube handles: The standard for T-bar handles. Often finished as brushed steel furniture handles to conceal fingerprints.
  • Square handles: Bar handles with an angular cross-section. These appear more solid and are frequently fitted as matt black furniture handles in modern, industrial designs.
  • Solid vs hollow: Hollow tubes are lighter, whilst solid bars made of stainless steel or aluminium offer higher torsional rigidity on very wide fronts.

Dimensions and standards

When installing and replacing furniture handles, the hole spacing (hole centres) is the crucial measurement. This defines the distance between the centres of the two drill holes. In European furniture manufacturing, System 32 applies here, where the spacings are always a multiple of 32 mm.

Typical hole centres for bar and T-bar handles are:

  • Furniture handles 128 mm
  • Furniture handles 160mm
  • Furniture handles 192mm

In addition to the hole spacing, the bar diameter is relevant. Common tube thicknesses for T-bar handles are 10 mm, 12 mm, or 14 mm. On wide pull-outs (from 800 mm upwards), handles with three bases are often utilised to prevent the bar from sagging under tensile load.

Application and selection

The choice between a T-bar and a bar handle depends on the required pulling force and the front panel size. Cupboard handles on tall hinged doors often require long bar handles to allow ergonomic leverage across the entire height.

In damp rooms or high-traffic areas, such as fittings used as kitchen furniture handles, attention should be paid to corrosion-resistant materials such as stainless steel or anodised aluminium. On heavy pull-outs carrying pots or crockery, a wide T-bar handle fitted as drawer handles (wall unit handles) distributes the pulling force evenly across the front panel and protects the material.
