Types of Lift-Up Flap Fittings: Bi-Fold, Up-and-Over and Parallel Lift Explained
A flap fitting is a mechanical or pneumatic system designed for wall units that opens cabinet fronts upwards and holds them securely in any position. The main types include the bi-fold flap for split fronts, the up-and-over flap for single-piece doors, and the parallel lift flap, where the front glides upwards parallel to the cabinet carcase.
What exactly is a flap fitting?
In modern furniture construction, flap systems replace traditional hinges on high-level cabinets. The core component of such a fitting is the lift mechanism. This mechanism balances the dead weight of the furniture front. Technically speaking, the system functions like the tailgate of a car: it assists the upward movement and prevents uncontrolled falling.
While kitchen cabinet pull-outs provide ergonomics in base units, flap fittings in wall units ensure maximum headroom. They are typically equipped with soft-close damping to enable silent closing.
The main types of flap fittings defined
The choice of kinematics depends on the ceiling height, the cabinet construction, and the available clearance above the carcase.
1. Bi-fold lift flap
In this system, the front is split horizontally into two parts. When opened, the door folds upwards in the middle. This requires a dedicated intermediate hinge connecting both front sections. The bi-fold lift flap is particularly suitable for tall wall units, as the handle remains easily reachable even when fully opened.
2. Up-and-over flap
The up-and-over flap swings a single-piece front in an arced movement over the cabinet carcase. Because the door extends above the cabinet when open, sufficient clearance is required above the furniture piece. Cornices, pelmets, or top-mounted lights must be calculated precisely during planning.
3. Parallel lift flap
In this design, the front does not swing out, but is lifted vertically and parallel to the cabinet carcase. The parallel lift flap is the ideal technical solution for cabinets with further units positioned above them, or for use in recesses where an arced swinging movement would be obstructed.
4. Standard lift-up flap
The simplest variant pivots a single-piece front around a pivot point along the top edge of the cabinet. These frequently utilise simple mechanical springs or a gas strut. For thick MDF panels or solid timber fronts, dedicated heavy-duty versions are available.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
Accurate technical parameters are crucial for installation and selecting the correct fitting:
- Opening angle: Standard opening angles range from 90° to 107°. If required, these can be reduced using an opening angle restrictor (e.g. to 75°).
- Carcase height: Fittings generally accommodate heights from 250 mm - 1040 mm.
- Lift mechanism capacity: Pneumatic stays are measured in Newtons (N). Common ratings range from 50 N (lightweight fronts) to 500 N (heavy fronts). Mechanical mechanisms are often classified using a power factor (carcase height in mm × front weight in kg).
- Drilling pattern: Mounting points frequently follow the System 32 standard, standardising pre-drilling in industrial manufacturing.
Application and professional selection
The installer selects the fitting strictly according to the front weight. The weight of the kitchen furniture handles must always be added to the raw panel weight. If the lift mechanism is under-specified, the flap will not stay open in the desired position. If it is too strong, the door will snap upwards aggressively and will require significant effort to close. Many modern lift mechanisms can be infinitely adjusted to the exact front weight using an adjustment screw.
