What is ABS Edging? Furniture & Chipboard Edge Banding Explained

An ABS edge is a thermoplastic edge banding made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene. It provides mechanical protection and visual sealing for the exposed cut edges of wood-based panels such as chipboard or MDF. In furniture construction, it protects the core material against impacts, moisture, and fraying.

What Exactly is an ABS Edge?

When coated panel materials are cut to size, the inner core is left exposed. To seal this core, an edge strip is applied either industrially or in a workshop. The material acrylonitrile butadiene styrene has established itself as the industry standard because it is exceptionally impact-resistant, heat-resistant, and free from chlorine and formaldehyde.

The edging acts like a mechanical bumper for the sensitive panel structure. It is applied using an edgebander and hot-melt adhesive (usually EVA or PUR adhesive) pressed onto the narrow edge of the board under pressure and heat. Afterwards, the machine trims the excess flush and slightly rounds the corners. In contrast to older melamine edges, ABS does not splinter under impact.

Typical Dimensions and Standards

In furniture manufacturing, edge dimensions depend on the thickness of the core board and the mechanical demands placed upon it.

  • Edge thickness: The most common thicknesses are 0.4 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, and 2.0 mm. Thin edges (0.4 mm) are often used for concealed cabinet carcass components. Visible fronts and heavily stressed edges (such as on desks) typically receive a 2.0 mm thick edge, as this allows for a clean routing radius and provides maximum impact resistance.
  • Edge width: The edge roll is always slightly wider than the panel thickness to compensate for milling tolerances. For a standard 16 mm board (for example, in Sonoma oak finish), an edge width of 22 mm or 23 mm is typically processed.

Application in Furniture Making and Fitting Installation

Choosing the correct edge banding directly influences the durability of a piece of furniture and the installation of hardware. When carcasses are assembled from edged panels, furniture connectors are used. The edge must finish perfectly flush so that no gaps are formed.

A special scenario involves the installation of profile handles, which are fitted or screwed directly onto the narrow edge of the door. Such a furniture handle wraps around the edge. Care must be taken to ensure that the milling radii of the 2.0 mm edge do not clash with the internal profile of the handle. These handles are usually fastened from the rear. For a secure hold in the chipboard, wood screws and furniture screws are used. Depending on the pilot hole and handle profile, 4mm wood screws are suitable for this purpose.

If small drill holes appear near the edge in visible areas during installation or hinge alignment, they can be concealed using self-adhesive wood-look cover caps in a matching finish.

A retrofitted door damper reduces the impact force, which preserves the adhesive bond of the ABS edge over the long term.
