Ball Bearing vs. Roller Runners: Drawer Runner Systems Defined

A ball bearing runner relies on small steel balls inside a telescopic profile, enabling high load capacities and smooth, play-free movement. A roller runner, on the other hand, uses plastic rollers that run along an angled steel track. Both systems serve as drawer runners, but they differ fundamentally in load capacity, extension length, and installation method.

What Are Ball Bearing and Roller Runners Exactly?

The choice of mechanical system determines the running characteristics and installation of a drawer.

With a ball bearing runner, hardened steel balls run within a ball cage between inner and outer rail profiles. The design operates much like a multi-part telescope that slides into itself. This ensures high lateral stability and prevents the drawer from tilting or jamming under load. Installation is usually on the side of the drawer wall or in a routed groove (commonly 17 mm or 27 mm wide).

The roller runner consists of two separate, epoxy resin-coated steel profiles: the cabinet profile and the drawer profile. Movement is achieved via ball-bearing or sliding plastic rollers. The system is low-maintenance and tolerates minor inaccuracies during cabinet assembly. A practical installation benefit is the easy fitting and removal of the drawer by lifting it slightly, as the profiles are not locked rigidly together.

Types and Extension Variants

Runner systems are defined by their extension length and additional movement mechanisms:

  • Full extension: The drawer can be pulled out 100% from the cabinet. Mechanically, this is almost exclusively achievable with ball bearing runners. Full extension drawer runners provide complete access right to the very back.
  • Partial extension: The drawer remains roughly 25% inside the cabinet. Due to their design, roller runners are usually partial extensions.
  • Soft-close: An integrated damper that absorbs momentum during closing and gently pulls the drawer shut. Soft-close drawer runners use a small hydraulic damper for this purpose.
  • Push-to-open: A mechanical release for handleless frontages. A simple push on the front opens the drawer. Important: this is the exact mechanical counterpart to soft-close. Push to open drawer runners cannot usually be combined with standard soft-close damping.
  • Self-closing: A spring mechanism that pulls the drawer closed over the final centimetres, without active hydraulic damping. Found on self-closing drawer runners.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

The sizing of runners depends on the cabinet depth and the anticipated weight.

  • Lengths: Nominal lengths generally cover the range from 250 mm - 800 mm, matching standard furniture grids. Short models like 250 mm drawer runners are suitable for bathroom furniture, the 400 mm drawer runner size is standard for chests of drawers, and long variants such as 600 mm drawer runners are often used in workshop environments or deep kitchen base units.
  • Load capacity: A classic roller runner is designed for dynamic loads of 15 kg to 25 kg. Standard ball bearing runners support 30 kg to 45 kg. Heavy duty drawer runners achieve load ratings from 80 kg to over 130 kg thanks to thicker material gauges and larger ball diameters.
  • Fixings: Mounting into the cabinet is ideally completed using the standard hole pattern (System 32) with Euro screws (Ø 6.3 mm) or dedicated chipboard screws (Ø 3.5 mm or 4 mm) with PZ drive or TX drive.

Application & Selection

Choosing between the two systems depends on the intended purpose. Roller drawer runners are the cost-effective choice for lightweight furniture items such as bedside tables, keyboard trays, or basic desk pedestals. They accommodate installation tolerances and fit quickly.

Ball bearing runners are the standard for high-demand furniture construction. They are essential when full extension is required, when heavy cookware is stored in kitchen drawers, or when precise lateral tracking without wobbling is necessary.
