When a cabinet flap drops shut by itself, the cause is almost always a defective or undersized gas strut whose extension force in Newtons has deteriorated.
A falling front on wall units is not only an ergonomic nuisance, but it also presents a genuine safety hazard. Especially with substantial fronts made from MDF or heavy solid wood, uncontrolled closing can lead to injuries or damage to the cabinet carcase. Often, simply replacing the cylinders is enough, provided the correct parameters for stroke and force have been calculated.
Why the Cabinet Flap No Longer Holds Open
The system for an upward-opening cabinet flap usually consists of two components: the hinges (mostly concealed cup hinges on the top panel) for the pivoting movement and the lifting mechanisms that support the weight of the front. If the flap drops shut, the following causes should be considered:
- Pressure loss in the cylinder: Much like a car tyre that slowly loses air over the years, a gas strut can lose its compressed nitrogen gas through aged or porous seals. The holding force decreases continuously until the flap's own weight can no longer be supported.
- Incorrect force specification: If a strut with an insufficient N rating (Newton) was selected during initial assembly or a previous replacement, it will not be able to hold the front in the open position from the outset.
- Mechanical defect: Bent piston rods caused by improper operation (forcing the door shut) or broken plastic sockets on the mounting plates.
- Loose fixings: Stripped chipboard screws on the side walls of the carcase alter the leverage angle, meaning the kinematics of the fitting no longer operate at the calculated dead centre.

1. Visual and Functional Inspection
Open the flap completely. Check that the concealed cup hinges on the top panel are securely fastened and correctly aligned. Next, inspect the gas struts for visible oil leaks on the piston rod. A light film of lubricant is normal, but dripping indicates a failed seal.
2. Removing the Old Struts
Most cylinders are connected to the mounting plates on the carcase and the front via ball joints. Slide a small flat-head screwdriver under the metal retaining clip on the ball socket and gently lever it upwards. The strut can now be pulled off the ball stud without effort. Repeat this on the opposite side.
3. Checking the Hole Patterns
Ensure that the mounting plates are firmly fixed. If they utilise standard line boring (System 32) with a hole diameter of 5 mm, inspect the edges of the holes for tear-out. If the holes are widened, insert repair dowels or use thicker wood screws.

Press the ball sockets of the new struts onto the ball studs of the mounting plates until they click audibly into place. If the print is no longer legible, the required force must be calculated. The formula is based on the weight of the front including the handle.
- Rule of thumb: 1 kg front weight = 10 N
- Add a safety buffer of around 20 per cent for the lever arm.
- Example: If the flap weighs 3 kg, you will require a total force of roughly 30 N to 40 N. With two struts installed, this value is divided between them; however, due to hardware design, two 50 N or 60 N struts are typically used to guarantee smooth, synchronised opening.
For particularly heavy fronts made of solid wood or wide constructions over 800 mm in width, dedicated gas struts for heavy flaps are required. These often operate with values of 120 N to 150 N.

- Do not force the door: A flap supported by gas pressure should never be pulled down forcefully. The gas inside the cylinder requires a fraction of a second to flow through the internal valve.
- Observe the opening angle: The maximum opening angle (usually 75°, 90°, or 110°) is defined by the position of the mounting plates. Strictly adhere to the mm dimensions in the technical data sheet to prevent overextending the joint.

Why does the flap no longer open fully to the top? If the force in Newtons is correct, the issue is often insufficient stroke (the travel distance of the piston rod in mm) or incorrectly positioned mounting points on the carcase. Shift the lower mounting plate back by a few millimetres.
