Carcass Connectors & Cabinet Connectors: Definition & Furniture Assembly Types
Carcass connectors and cabinet connectors are mechanical fittings that join two furniture components together—usually at a 90-degree angle—securely and often releasably. They form the structural backbone of cabinet furniture, enabling the stable assembly of wardrobes, chests of drawers, and shelving units made from board materials such as chipboard or MDF.
What exactly is a carcass connector?
In modern furniture construction, a connecting fitting takes on the task of absorbing tensile and shear forces between components. In contrast to rigid gluing or complex traditional woodwork joints, many of these systems allow non-destructive dismantling. They generally consist of two or more components that are inserted into precisely pre-drilled holes in the engineered wood and then clamped via a mechanical mechanism. Like a steel joint in a skeleton, they ensure that the structure does not yield under load.
Types and Variants
Depending on the requirements for load capacity, visibility, and assembly speed, different carcass connectors are used:
- Cam and dowel connectors: The standard in flat-pack furniture construction. The system consists of a round cam housing and a connecting dowel. Turning the cam pulls the head of the dowel tight, pressing the panels flush against one another.
- Direct connecting screws: Specialised wood screws (often referred to as Confirmat screws) featuring a thick shank and coarse thread. They require precise pre-drilling, usually with a dedicated stepped drill bit.
- Trapezoidal connectors: A two-part fitting in which a wedge or trapezoid insert is screwed into a matching housing. Highly resistant to tension and well suited for heavy-duty shelving.
- Connecting bolts and sleeves: Often used as cabinet connectors to secure finished cabinet carcasses side by side (for example in a fitted kitchen run). They consist of an internally threaded sleeve and a matching machine screw.
- Concealed connectors: Hidden systems that are frequently routed entirely into the edge face of the panel.
Depending on the required load rating, these fittings are manufactured from die-cast zinc, steel, or plastic.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
The exact positioning of drill holes is crucial for the correct function of furniture connectors. In professional furniture manufacturing, dimensions generally align with System 32.
- Cam housing drilling diameter: Typically 15 mm.
- Drilling depth: Dependent on board thickness, usually 12 mm - 14 mm for standard chipboard measuring 16 mm or 19 mm.
- Connecting dowel: The thread is frequently designed for 5 mm drill holes or features a metric thread for a threaded insert. The typical clamping length is 24 mm or 34 mm.
- Direct connecting screws: Common dimensions are 5 x 50 mm or 7 x 50 mm. Driving is usually via PZ or a hex key.
Application and Selection
Selecting the right connecting fitting depends significantly on board thickness, expected loading, and the requirement for dismantling. For heavily loaded connections (such as base panels in wardrobes), metal is recommended, whereas plastic is often sufficient for lightweight infill panels. For modular cabinets or furniture that will be moved in future, classic cam systems are the ideal choice. When joining two standalone cabinets flush against each other, threaded sleeve connector bolts are used.
