Carcass Connectors: Definition and How Cabinet Connectors Work
A carcass connector is a structural fitting that joins two furniture components—usually a side panel and a base or top panel—securely and often detachably. In professional furniture manufacturing, cam fittings are predominantly used, enabling concealed assembly and rapid clamping of the components via an integrated rotary mechanism.
What exactly is a carcass connector?
The term covers a wide range of mechanical connecting systems for cabinet making. The primary function is to securely join sheet materials such as chipboard or MDF at right angles without visible screw heads on the exterior.
The classic two-part system consists of a connecting dowel (the bolt) and a cam housing. By turning the cam, the head of the bolt is gripped and drawn in, pulling both panel edges firmly together. This mirrors the principle of a turnbuckle in mechanical engineering, which pulls two elements together with zero play.
Types and variants
Depending on the requirements for load capacity and visibility, various furniture connectors are used:
- Cam connectors: The standard in cabinet carcass manufacturing. The housing is usually made of die-cast zinc, and the bolt is made of steel. They allow for an invisible construction from the outside.
- Direct connectors (Confirmat screws): A one-piece metal solution. It requires precise pre-drilling with a stepped drill bit, provides very high tensile strength, but remains visible from the outside unless covered with a cap.
- Plastic connectors: Often designed as surface-mounted corner brackets. They are suitable for lightweight structures or pelmets where high pull-out forces do not occur.
- Concealed connectors: Special fittings recessed entirely into a groove or bore, often locked in place using magnetism, clamping sleeves, or small hexagonal keys.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
When working with sheet materials, standardised dimensions apply that are precisely aligned with the System 32 in machine production.
- Drilling diameter for the cam housing: Typically 15 mm.
- Drilling depth for the housing: Depending on the material thickness, usually 12 mm to 14 mm for a 16 mm thick panel.
- Drilling diameter for the bolt: 5 mm (for Euro thread) or 8 mm (for expanding wood dowel thread).
- Panel thicknesses: Common carcass connectors are designed for material thicknesses of 15 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm. The housing must strictly match the panel thickness so that the bolt is gripped precisely in the centre.
- Drive: The cam is usually tightened using a cross-recess drive (PZ) or a hexagon socket.
Usage and installation
Installation requires precise pre-drilling, ideally using a pillar drill, a CNC router, or a dedicated drilling jig. The connecting dowel is inserted into the face of the first component. The cam housing is pressed into the 15 mm hole of the second component.
Once the panels are fitted together, a half turn (approx. 180°) with a screwdriver is enough to lock the joint securely. A technical advantage of this design is that the joint can be non-destructively dismantled at any time, allowing flat-pack furniture to be transported easily. To absorb shear forces and ensure precise alignment, additional wooden dowels (typically 8 mm) are almost always installed alongside the connector.
