When building or repairing cabinets, joiners and fitters inevitably face the question of which fixing system to choose for furniture doors. The connection between the hinge arm and the base plate inside the cabinet significantly defines how efficiently the final assembly proceeds. The two dominant standards on the market are the traditional slide-on system and modern clip-on technology. Both variants have their specific mechanical properties and areas of application in cabinet making.

What is Slide-On Mounting?
The slide-on system is the classic method for connecting concealed hinges / cabinet hinges to the mounting plate. The name describes the mechanical process: the hinge arm is pushed onto the base plate that has already been screwed to the cabinet side panel.
At the back of the hinge arm, there is a slot that slides under the head of the rear fixing screw on the mounting plate. Once the arm is correctly positioned, this screw must be tightened using a screwdriver (usually PZ2 or TX). Only through the physical clamping pressure of the screw is the concealed hinge firmly connected to the carcase.
The cup drilling in the furniture door remains unaffected by this – the industry-standard dimension of 35 mm (or 26 mm for small doors) continues to be used. The slide-on system necessarily requires tools and a steady hand when fitting the door, as the door must be held in position while tightening the screw.
What is Clip-On Technology?
Clip-on technology represents the further development of hinge attachment. Pushing the hinge arm under a screw is completely eliminated here. The mounting plate features a special geometry with front retaining lugs and a rear latching mechanism.
The installation procedure changes fundamentally: the hinge is placed against the front edge of the cruciform mounting plate and then audibly engaged by applying light pressure to the rear section of the hinge arm. Clip-on technology works like a modern ski binding: click into place and you are done. An integrated spring mechanism in the hinge arm hooks under the edge of the mounting plate and locks the system securely in place.
For removal, there is a small lever or release button at the rear end of the hinge arm. When this is pressed, the catch releases, and the door can be taken off towards the front. Here too, the connection to the door is identical, for example using classic concealed hinges 35 mm.

- Tool requirements during door fitting: Slide-on strictly requires a screwdriver to connect the door to the carcase. With clip-on technology, this step is completely tool-free. Tools are only needed for both systems during the initial fixing of the mounting plates to the carcase and for subsequent 3D gap adjustment.
- Handling large fronts: Heavy doors made of MDF or thick-walled doors made of chipboard often require three to five hinges. With slide-on technology, it is physically demanding to support a heavy door whilst simultaneously sliding and screwing the hinges onto the plates. With clip-on technology, the top hinge is hooked in, the door supports its own weight, and the remaining hinges are simply clicked into place one after the other.
- Disassembly and maintenance: If a cabinet needs to be dismantled for moving house or a door removed for cleaning, the clip-on system demonstrates its strength. Pressing the release lever is all it takes. With slide-on, the fixing screws must be loosened, which can wear down the screw head or the thread of the mounting plate with frequent repetition.

Areas of Application for the Slide-On System
The classic slide-on system is a solid, practical solution for static furniture that will not be dismantled after assembly. It is ideally suited to smaller cabinet units, such as lightweight wall units, bathroom units, or simple chests of drawers. When installing standard doors with an opening angle of 110°, conventional concealed hinges 110 degrees with slide-on technology completely fulfil their purpose.
Because the design contains fewer complex components (such as springs and release levers), it is very robust. For workshop cupboards or simple larder units where the door remains permanently in place after initial installation, slide-on is a technically adequate and economical choice.

As soon as the construction becomes more demanding, clip-on technology shows its structural advantages. On large wardrobes with full-length doors supported by multiple hinges, tool-free assembly is an essential factor for smooth installation.
Likewise, the clip-on variant is indispensable in complex hinge overlay situations. When several doors are fixed to a centre partition, half overlay concealed hinges are used. Operating a screwdriver inside a confined carcase interior is made significantly easier by simply clipping the hinges on. The same applies to inset fronts where inset concealed hinges are used. Space constraints here are often so tight that tool-free snapping prevents mistakes and damage to the finish.
The clip-on system is also advantageous with special opening angles. Wide-angle hinges, such as concealed hinges 165 degrees, often have bulky, multi-jointed arms. These heavy fittings can be positioned and installed much more precisely when they only need to be clicked into place.

Compatibility of Mounting Plates
A crucial technical aspect when replacing or planning is the compatibility of the mounting plates. A slide-on mounting plate can never be combined with a clip-on hinge arm, and vice versa. The physical connection is engineered completely differently.
What is standardised, however, is the hole pattern in the carcase. Most mounting plates – whether clip-on or slide-on – use the standardised System 32. This means the holes for Euro screws or wood screws in the cabinet side panel have a spacing of 32 mm from one another and are typically set 37 mm back from the front edge. If an old slide-on system is replaced with a new clip-on system, both the hinge and the mounting plate must be replaced as a set. However, the existing drill holes in the wood can usually continue to be used without issue.

Can I replace an existing slide-on hinge with a clip-on version? Yes, replacement is possible. The prerequisites are that the cup hole in the door (usually 35 mm) matches and the new cruciform mounting plate uses the same drilling pattern (e.g. System 32) as the old plate.
