A cable grommet is a round or rectangular furniture fitting inserted into a routed opening in a desktop to pass cables through neatly. It protects cable sheaths from the sharp edges of the cut-out and ensures structured cable management across the desk. Standard hole diameters are usually 60 mm or 80 mm.

What exactly is a cable grommet?

This fitting, frequently referred to as a desk cable tidy or desk grommet, generally consists of two components: an outer ring or sleeve that sits securely in the cut-out hole of the tabletop, and a removable cover. The cover is often fitted with a brush seal or a swivel lid. This design acts like an eyelet that bundles and secures the cable harness while simultaneously preventing plugs from slipping beneath the desk when not in use.

Dimensions, Standards and Hole Cut-Out Diameters

Installing a round grommet requires an accurate drilled hole in the chipboard or solid wood. The most common cut-out dimensions in the furniture industry are:

60 mm hole diameter: Ideal for individual mains leads, slim USB cables, and charging leads. Suitable for a 60mm desk cable grommet.
80 mm hole diameter: Provides ample space to pass bulky mains plugs, multi-socket extension cables, and wide monitor leads. Suitable for an 80mm desk cable grommet.

The hole is typically made using a hole saw or a Forstner bit. The installation dimension (cut-out size) must correspond precisely to the nominal diameter of the fitting. In most cases, the grommet is simply pressed into place and held under tension by fine ribs or ridges along its rim.

Cable grommets differ primarily in their shape and the material used, depending on the expected load and furniture design.

Shapes

The round cable grommet is the industry standard because it can be routed or drilled out most quickly using a standard drill. For more elaborate office desks, a rectangular cable grommet is often fitted. This requires a router and a template to achieve clean, tear-out-free edges.

Materials and Finishes

For standard workstations, a plastic cable grommet is frequently used. Higher-specification conference tables require sturdier solutions, such as a metal cable grommet.

To match the fitting visually with the furniture finish, various colours are available. Popular for dark wood or industrial styling is the black cable grommet. For lighter decors, fitters typically choose a white cable grommet.

Application and Installation Tips

When positioning the grommet on the desktop, it is essential to check the substructure of the table. The centre point of the hole should be selected so that the cut-out does not collide with the desk frame crossbar, an under-desk cable tray, or the modesty panel. A standard distance is 50 mm - 100 mm from the rear edge of the desk.
