Euro Screws — Definition & Differences from Standard Wood Screws
A Euro screw is a specialised furniture screw featuring a blunt end and a deep, cylindrical thread. It is precisely tailored to the standardised System 32 in cabinet making and is driven into pre-drilled 5 mm hole rows to anchor fittings such as hinges or drawer runners securely and with high pull-out strength into chipboard.
What Exactly Is a Euro Screw?
The Euro screw (often referred to as a specialised fixing screw for fittings) is the backbone of modern furniture assembly. Unlike conventional screws, its core diameter remains constant across the entire shank length. The thread is particularly deep and sharp-edged.
Much like a perfectly fitting wall plug in masonry, this deep thread grips directly into the board material. This creates a positive locking connection that does not yield even under dynamic loads — such as the constant opening and closing of a heavy cabinet door. It is the standard solution for securely fixing mounting plates for concealed hinges or cabinet runner profiles to the inner side of a carcass.
The Difference Compared to Standard Wood Screws
In practice, the question often arises whether to use classic wood screws and furniture screws or Euro screws. The technical differences are distinct:
- The point: Standard wood screws have a sharp point that pierces the material and cuts its own thread. Euro screws have a flat, blunt end.
- The pilot hole: Whilst small wood screws (such as 3.5mm wood screws) often manage without pre-drilling in softer materials, the Euro screw requires the fitter to make an exact 5 mm pilot hole.
- Grip in engineered wood panels: In manufactured materials such as MDF or traditional chipboard, standard wood screws with a tapered core tend to tear out under tensile load. The Euro screw distributes tensile forces more evenly throughout the material thanks to its specific thread profile, offering substantially higher pull-out resistance.
Dimensions, Drive Types, and Standards
The dimensions of a Euro screw are strictly standardised to ensure cross-manufacturer compatibility within System 32.
- Outer thread diameter: Typically 6.3 mm.
- Drill hole diameter: Strictly 5 mm.
- Lengths: Lengths of 10 mm, 11 mm, 13 mm, or 14 mm are most commonly used for securing fittings.
- Head style: Available as countersunk (sits flush in the fitting) or as pan head (round head, rests flat on the fitting).
- Drive: In the European furniture industry, the cross-recess PZ2 drive (Pozidriv, similar to PZ2 wood screws) dominates. Less common, yet still encountered, is the PH2 drive (Phillips, comparable to PH2 wood screws).
Application & Installation in Practice
The range of applications for the Euro screw is clearly defined. It is primarily used wherever metal fittings meet engineered wood panels.
When installing runner profiles for drawer systems, the rail is positioned against the carcass side. The Euro screws are driven through the dedicated 5 mm holes in the runner directly into the pre-drilled row of holes in the cabinet. Crucial during installation: the torque setting of the cordless screwdriver must be adjusted to match the density of the chipboard to prevent overtightening ("stripping") the thread in the wood. Once the thread is stripped, the screw loses all its holding capacity.
For other types of carcass joints, cabinetmakers turn to different fasteners. For instance, when joining two cabinets side-by-side, one does not use Euro screws, but rather connecting sleeve screws. When it comes to purely aesthetic fixings in visible sections of dark furniture, specifications tend to favour black wood screws instead.
