Step 2: Drilling the Side Panel (Face)

  3. Wooden dowels (Edge): Drill the 8 mm holes for the dowels into the edge (depth approx. 16 mm).

Tip for tear-free drilling: Forstner bits tend to tear the decorative layer on melamine-faced panels. Run the drill at high speed but with very light feed pressure until the rim cutters have cleanly severed the coating.

Step 4: Inserting the Fittings

  1. Screw the bolts into the 5 mm holes in the side panel. Ensure that the shoulder of the bolt sits flush against the panel surface. Use the matching bit (e.g. PZ2). Overtightening in chipboard will strip the thread in the core.
  2. Insert the wooden dowels into the side panel.
  3. Press the round cam casings into the 15 mm holes of the horizontal panel. The small arrow on the casing must point directly towards the edge (i.e. towards the bolt entry hole).

Step 5: Joining the Carcase at 90 Degrees

  1. Offer the horizontal panel up to the side panel at an exact right angle.
  2. The wooden dowels and the heads of the connecting bolts must slide simultaneously into the edge holes of the horizontal panel.
  3. Push the components together until they meet seamlessly. The head of the bolt is now positioned inside the centre of the cam casing.

Step 6: Locking and Tightening

  1. Insert a hand screwdriver (usually PZ2 or a matching hex key) into the cam.
  2. Turn the cam clockwise. Due to the internal curved profile, the fitting grips the bolt head and firmly clamps the panels together.
  3. After approximately 180° to 210° of rotation, you will feel distinct resistance. The connector is now locked. Do not continue turning with excessive force, as the die-cast zinc casing may break.

Repeat this process for all corners. If you are assembling a large wardrobe for 2 people, for example, it is best to construct the carcase lying flat on the floor, securing all corner connectors and nailing the back panel in place before standing it upright.

Common Assembly Errors and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced installers occasionally encounter issues when fitting corner connectors. Here are the most frequent problems and their solutions:

  • Gap refuses to close: If a gap of 1 mm or 2 mm remains between the panels, the 15 mm hole for the cam was drilled too far from the edge. The travel of the fitting is then insufficient. The only solution is to carefully relieve the hole slightly towards the edge (e.g. using a wood chisel).
  • Tear-out on the edge: If the 5 mm drill bit wanders when drilling into the edge, it will break through the decorative surface of the side. Always use a drilling jig or dowelling guide to ensure you stay at an exact 90-degree angle and dead centre in the edge.
