However, the success of your kitchen cabinet door replacement project relies entirely on selecting and installing the correct hardware. While new frontages provide the visual transformation, it is the hinges, mounting plates, and fixings that ensure everything hangs straight, opens smoothly, and withstands daily wear.

Measuring and Drilling Hinge Cup Holes

When ordering replacement doors for kitchen cabinets, you may receive them un-drilled or with standard factory drillings. To ensure a proper fit, you need to understand the dimensions of concealed European hinges:

  • Cup Diameter: The vast majority of modern kitchen hinges use a 35 mm cup hole. Some compact or specialist hinges use a 26 mm hole, so always measure your existing hardware before buying.
  • Cup Depth: Standard hinge cups require a depth of 11.5 mm to 12.5 mm. Drilling too deep can puncture the decorative face of a standard 18 mm door.
  • Edge Distance (Drilling Margin): The gap between the outer edge of the door and the rim of the 35 mm cup hole is typically between 3 mm and 5 mm. This offset determines the door overlay on the carcass.
  • Hinge Centres: Measure the distance from the top and bottom edges of the carcass to the centre of the mounting plate screws. Replicate these exact centres on your new doors using a 35 mm Forstner bit and a drill guide.

Selecting the Correct Cabinet Hinges and Mounting Plates

Carcasses vary across UK kitchens, meaning a successful kitchen cabinet door replacements project requires matching the hinge geometry to the cabinet structure:

  • Full Overlay: The door completely covers the front edge of the cabinet carcass side panel, leaving only a small gap between adjacent units. This is the most common setup in modern flat-pack kitchens.
  • Half Overlay: Two doors share a single central divider panel (often 15 mm or 18 mm thick). A cranked hinge ensures both doors can open independently without colliding.
  • Inset (Embedded): The door sits entirely flush inside the carcass frame, exposing the outer cabinet edge.

Always inspect the mounting plates on the carcass. If the existing screw holes are worn or stripped, consider upgrading to cruciform mounting plates with expanding euro screws or wood screws with repair plugs for a firm anchor.

Integrated Soft-Close and Buffer Mechanisms

Modernising your cabinets is the ideal opportunity to introduce soft-close functionality. Soft-close mechanisms prevent doors from slamming, reducing mechanical stress on the hinge arms and carcass fixings. You can achieve this using:

  • Integrated Soft-Close Hinges: The hydraulic dampener is built directly into the hinge body or cup for a neat, concealed finish.
  • Clip-on Dampers: Retrofit components that clip securely onto the back of existing standard hinges.
  • Piston Buffers: Small surface-mounted or drill-in soft-close pistons fitted directly into the carcass leading edge.

Aligning and Adjusting Your New Doors

Once hung, new doors rarely align perfectly on the first try. Standard concealed hinges provide three-dimensional adjustment via integrated screws:

  1. Lateral (Side-to-Side): Adjust the front screw on the hinge arm to set the correct vertical gap between adjacent doors.
  2. Vertical (Height): Loosen the mounting plate screws on the carcass to shift the door up or down, then retighten.
  3. Depth (In-and-Out): Adjust the rear screw on the hinge arm to bring the door flush against the carcass face and ensure uniform contact with rubber buffers.

Fitting Handles and Knobs

The final stage of any kitchen cabinets door replacement is attaching the handles. Using an adjustable drilling jig ensures identical spacing across all doors and drawers. Check the handle centre-to-centre dimensions (standard hole centres include 96 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm, and 192 mm) and ensure your M4 fixing bolts are cut to the exact thickness of your door plus handle base to prevent loose fittings.
