Hardware Guide to Replacing Kitchen Cabinet Fronts

Giving a tired kitchen a fresh look does not always require a full tear-out of your existing carcass units. In many cases, simply replacing kitchen cabinet fronts can transform the entire space at a fraction of the cost. However, a successful refacing project hinges on getting the hardware right. From hinge cup measurements to handle drill patterns, proper preparation ensures your new doors hang straight, close smoothly, and align perfectly.

Measuring Hinge Cup Holes and Drilling Patterns

When ordering or drilling new cabinet doors, matching your existing hinge geometry is vital. Most modern UK kitchens use concealed cup hinges (often called Euro hinges), but standard specifications can vary slightly between manufacturers.

  • Cup Diameter: The standard industry diameter for concealed hinge cups is 35 mm, though some compact or specialist doors use 26 mm holes.
  • Drill Depth: Standard cup depth typically ranges from 11.5 mm to 13 mm. Ensure you do not drill too deep and pierce the front face of the door.
  • Edge Distance (Boring Distance): Measure the gap between the edge of the door and the edge of the drilled cup hole. This distance (usually 3 mm to 6 mm) directly determines how much the door overlaps the carcass frame.
  • Hole Centres: If you are purchasing pre-drilled doors, verify the distance from the top and bottom edges to the hinge centres so they correspond with your carcass mounting plates.

Selecting the Correct Concealed Hinges

When replacing kitchen cabinet fronts, you should decide whether to reuse your existing mounting plates or install complete new hinge assemblies. Upgrading to integrated soft-close hinges is often the most practical choice during a refit.

Full Overlay, Half Overlay, or Inset?

Ensure you select the correct crank profile for your unit configuration:

  • Full Overlay (Straight Arm): The door completely covers the front edge of the cabinet carcass (typically leaving a 1–2 mm reveal). This is the most common layout in standard UK kitchens.
  • Half Overlay (Cranked Arm): Used where two doors share a single central divider panel (carcass partition), allowing both to close without collision.
  • Inset (High Crank Arm): The door sits entirely inside the carcass opening, flush with the front edges of the unit panels.

Opening Angles

Standard cabinets usually require a 110-degree opening angle. However, corner units, larder cupboards, or units with internal pull-out wire baskets often need wide-angle hinges (such as 155-degree or 165-degree) to clear the internal space completely.

Choosing and Installing Cabinet Handles and Pulls

The final touch when replacing kitchen cabinet fronts is fitting new hardware. Taking the time to choose the right style and spacing makes installation straightforward and prevents costly drilling errors on new doors.

  • Hole Centre Spacing (CC): Standard bar and D-handles use industry spacings based on the 32 mm system (e.g., 96 mm, 128 mm, 160 mm, 192 mm). Single knobs require only a single hole, making them simpler to position.
  • Using a Drilling Template: Never measure handle holes entirely by eye. Use a rigid drilling jig or fabricate a timber template to guarantee consistent vertical and horizontal offsets across every cupboard and drawer front.
  • Preventing Tear-Out: When drilling screw holes through new doors, clamp a piece of scrap wood to the back of the panel to stop the drill bit from splintering the rear laminate or veneer.

Fine-Tuning Door Alignment

Once your new fronts are hung, use the three-way adjustment screws built into the hinge arms to align gaps cleanly:

  1. Lateral (Side-to-Side): Adjusts the horizontal reveal between adjoining doors.
  2. Vertical (Height): Loosens the mounting plate screws to shift the door up or down to match neighbouring fascias.
  3. Depth (In-and-Out): Moves the door closer to or further from the carcass edge to ensure flush alignment and proper soft-close contact.
