How to Adjust Cabinet Doors: A Step-by-Step Guide
Cabinet doors often drop or shift out of alignment over time through daily use, timber movement, or heavy door loads. Misaligned fronts can rub against adjacent units, sit proud of the carcass, or leave uneven visual gaps that spoil the finish of a kitchen or wardrobe. Fortunately, modern concealed hinges—often referred to as European hinges—are designed with built-in 3-way adjustment mechanisms. With a standard manual screwdriver and a methodical approach, adjusting cabinet doors back to a flush, plumb position takes only a few minutes.
Understanding 3-Way Concealed Hinges
Concealed hinges, whether standard sprung models or modern soft-close hinges, consist of two primary parts: the hinge cup set into a standard 35 mm recess in the door, and the mounting plate secured to the cabinet carcass. The hinge arm connects these components and contains the adjustment screws responsible for three axes of movement:
- Side-to-side (Lateral): Moves the door left or right to correct diagonal tilt and set even gaps between neighbouring doors.
- Height (Vertical): Moves the entire door up or down to align top and bottom horizontal sightlines.
- Depth (In-and-Out): Adjusts how close the back of the door sits against the cabinet frame when closed.
Always use a manual Pozi or Phillips screwdriver matching the screw heads. Using an electric impact driver on adjustment screws can strip the threads or the mounting plate mechanism.
Step-by-Step Guide to Adjusting Cabinet Doors
Work methodically through one axis at a time, making small incremental turns (a quarter to half turn) and closing the door to check the progress before continuing.
1. Correcting Vertical Alignment (Height Adjustment)
If the top edge of a door sits higher or lower than neighbouring units, adjust the mounting plates on the carcass.
- Loosen the top and bottom screws that secure each mounting plate to the internal cabinet wall. Do not remove them completely; loosen them just enough so the plate can slide.
- Manually shift the door up or down to match the height of adjacent doors.
- Tighten the plate screws firmly while supporting the weight of the door so it does not slip down again.
Note: Some advanced mounting plates feature a dedicated central cam screw for vertical adjustment. If present, turning this screw raises or lowers the door without needing to loosen the fixing screws.
2. Correcting Door Tilt and Gaps (Lateral Adjustment)
When a door hangs at an angle, overlaps the adjacent door, or has an uneven vertical gap, use the side-to-side screw located closest to the hinge cup on the hinge arm.
- Clockwise turn: Pulls the hinge side of the door closer to the carcass edge, swinging the opposite edge outwards.
- Anticlockwise turn: Pushes the hinge side away from the carcass edge, narrowing the gap on the latch side.
- To fix a sloping door, adjust only one hinge (e.g., turn the top hinge clockwise to pull a drooping top corner back into square).
3. Eliminating Gaps and Rubbing (Depth Adjustment)
If a door does not close flush against the carcass or rubs tightly against the face frame when opening, depth adjustment is required. The depth screw is usually the rearmost screw on the hinge arm.
- Turn the depth adjustment cam (or loosen the locking screw and slide the hinge arm forward or backward).
- Ensure the door sits roughly 1 mm to 2 mm clear of the front edge of the cabinet carcass. If it is too tight, the door will bind against the carcass when swung open.
- Re-tighten the screw if using a friction-slide plate mechanism.
Troubleshooting Persistent Alignment Issues
If adjusting cabinet door hinges fails to solve the issue, inspect the surrounding fittings:
- Loose Carcass Fixings: If the mounting plate wobbles, the chipboard screw holes may be enlarged. Fill worn holes with wooden dowels or use repair plates to restore grip.
- Carcass Out of Square: If the cabinet frame itself is twisted or not plumb against the wall, hinge adjustments cannot compensate fully. Check the unit with a spirit level.
- Soft-Close Mechanism Resistance: On doors fitted with integrated soft-close hinges, ensure the piston is not obstructed by internal shelving or loose items.
