How to Adjust Cupboard Doors: A Step-by-Step Guide
Over time, kitchen and wardrobe doors often begin to drop, rub against adjacent panels, or fail to close squarely. In most modern cabinetry, this misalignment is not caused by warped timber or broken carcases, but simply by loose or shifted hinges. Knowing how to adjust a cupboard door is a basic DIY skill that requires nothing more than a standard manual screwdriver and a few minutes of patience.
Understanding Concealed Hinge Adjustment Screws
Most modern cabinets use standard European concealed cup hinges (typically with a 35 mm cup drilled into the door). These fittings feature a built-in three-way adjustment mechanism. To adjust cupboard doors accurately, it helps to know what each screw on the hinge body does before you begin turning them:
- Side-to-Side (Lateral) Screw: Positioned towards the front of the hinge arm. Turning this screw moves the door left or right, altering the gap between adjacent doors or aligning the door with the edge of the cabinet frame.
- Depth (In-and-Out) Screw: Positioned towards the rear of the hinge arm. This controls the distance between the back of the door and the front edge of the cabinet carcase, ensuring the door closes flush without binding.
- Height (Vertical) Screws: Located on the mounting plate attached to the carcase wall. These screws sit in elongated oval slots, allowing you to shift the entire door up or down to align horizontal gaps across multiple units.
Step 1: Check Carcase Level and Tighten Loose Fixings
Before adjusting individual hinges, check that the cabinet itself is securely fixed and level. Next, examine the mounting plate screws that anchor the hinge to the cabinet wall. Loose screws will cause the door to sag regardless of how much you tweak the fine-adjustment screws. If any fixings are loose, tighten them by hand with a Pozi-drive screwdriver (usually PZ2) to avoid stripping the pre-drilled pilot holes in particleboard or MDF.
Step 2: Adjust Vertical Alignment (Height)
If the door sits too low or catches on a drawer below it, you need to adjust its vertical position:
- Support the weight of the door from below using a small timber wedge or your foot.
- Loosen the top and bottom screws on both mounting plates slightly (half a turn is usually sufficient).
- Slide the door up or down until the top edge is perfectly flush with neighbouring units.
- Re-tighten the mounting plate screws firmly before releasing the door.
Step 3: Correct Lateral Alignment (Side-to-Side)
If doors are overlapping in the middle or leaving an uneven vertical gap, use the lateral adjustment screw. Turning the screw clockwise draws the door closer to the cabinet side (widening the gap between a pair of doors). Turning it anti-clockwise pushes the door away from the side (narrowing the gap). If a door is sagging at an angle, turning the top hinge screw clockwise and the bottom hinge screw anti-clockwise will tilt the door back into a square position.
Step 4: Set the Depth Gap (In-and-Out)
If the door binds against the cabinet face or leaves a large gap when shut, loosen the rear depth screw on each hinge arm. Push or pull the door so that a consistent gap of approximately 1.5 mm to 2 mm remains between the carcase edge and the door panel. This prevents friction against the frame and allows soft-close mechanisms or buffer pads to function effectively. Once aligned, tighten the depth screws securely.
When to Replace Hinges and Plates
If turning the adjustment screws yields no movement, the internal threads may be stripped. Similarly, worn pivot pins can cause persistent sagging that cannot be corrected through adjustment. In these cases, replacing the worn hinges and mounting plates with new standard concealed hardware is the cleanest, most reliable solution to restore smooth operation.
