How to Adjust Cupboard Hinges: Easy Step-by-Step Guide

Cabinet doors that rub against their frames, sit at an awkward angle, or leave uneven gaps can make an otherwise pristine kitchen or wardrobe look untidy. Fortunately, modern concealed cabinet hinges (often referred to as European or cup hinges) feature integrated 3-way adjustment mechanisms. With just a standard cross-head screwdriver and a few minutes of your time, you can bring your doors back into perfect alignment without removing them from the carcass.

Understanding the 3-Way Cupboard Hinge Adjustment Mechanism

Standard concealed hinges operate using three distinct adjustment planes: vertical (height), horizontal (side-to-side or lateral), and depth (in-and-out). Before turning any screws, it helps to identify the role of each fixing on the hinge arm and mounting plate:

  • Height adjustment: Located on the mounting plate attached to the cabinet carcass. This moves the entire door up or down to align with adjacent doors.
  • Side-to-side adjustment: The screw closest to the door edge on the hinge arm. This changes the horizontal gap between adjacent doors or straightens a door hanging at a tilt.
  • Depth adjustment: The screw furthest from the door on the hinge arm (or inside a slotted track). This moves the door closer to or further away from the cabinet face frame.

Step 1: Assessing the Alignment Issues

Begin by closing all cabinet doors to evaluate where the discrepancies lie. Check for three common problems:

  • Uneven top/bottom edges: One door sits higher or lower than its neighbour.
  • Tilted doors or inconsistent gaps: The vertical gap between a pair of doors is wider at the top than at the bottom.
  • Rubbing or standing proud: The door catches on the frame or does not sit flush against the carcass when closed.

Step 2: Correcting Height (Vertical Alignment)

If your cupboard doors do not line up along their top or bottom edges, you will need to adjust the mounting plates:

  1. Loosen the mounting plate screws on both the top and bottom hinges slightly. Do not remove them completely.
  2. Support the weight of the door and slide it upwards or downwards until it sits level with adjacent units.
  3. Tighten the screws securely on both mounting plates to lock the height in place.

Step 3: Correcting Tilt and Gaps (Side-to-Side Alignment)

For doors that sit crooked or leave uneven vertical gaps between double-door cabinets, use the front screw on the hinge arm:

  1. Turn the screw clockwise on the top hinge to shift the top of the door closer to the cabinet edge (tilting the door outwards).
  2. Turn the screw anticlockwise to move the door towards the centre of the unit.
  3. Make small quarter-turn adjustments and close the door after each turn to check your progress. Often, making a slight tweak to both top and bottom hinges yields the best balance.

Step 4: Correcting Gaps and Binding (Depth Alignment)

If a door does not close flush against the front of the carcass or rubs against the frame when opening, depth cupboard hinges adjustment is required:

  1. Loosen the rear screw on the hinge arm slightly.
  2. Gently pull the door forward or push it back towards the cabinet body to achieve an even gap of around 1 mm to 2 mm between the door back and the carcass edge.
