How to Adjust IKEA Cabinet Hinges Properly
Cabinet doors that hang crooked, rub against the carcass, or fail to close flush are common issues in any home. Fortunately, modern flat-pack cabinetry uses standard concealed cup hinges that allow precise three-way adjustment. Mastering the process of adjusting IKEA hinges takes only a few minutes, a standard Pozi screwdriver, and a methodical approach to get your doors perfectly aligned.
Understanding 3-Way Concealed Hinge Adjustment
Concealed hinges (often known as Euro hinges) use a standard 35 mm cup drilled into the back of the door and a mounting plate secured inside the carcass. On most units, whether standard or soft-close, the hinge arm contains three distinct adjustment points:
- Side-to-side (Lateral): Shifts the door left or right to correct uneven vertical gaps between adjacent doors.
- Height (Vertical): Moves the door up or down to align the top and bottom edges with neighbouring units.
- Depth (In-and-Out): Adjusts the gap between the door and the cabinet carcass, preventing rubbing against the frame.
Step 1: Vertical Adjustment (Height)
If the top edges of your cupboard doors are stepped rather than level, you need to adjust the vertical height. Unlike lateral and depth tweaks, this adjustment is typically made directly on the mounting plate attached to the cabinet wall.
Loosen the two vertical mounting screws on both top and bottom hinge plates slightly (turn them anti-clockwise by half a turn). Gently lift or lower the door to the correct height, hold it steady, and retighten the screws securely. Make sure both plates are locked at the same level so the door operates smoothly without binding.
Step 2: Lateral Adjustment (Side-to-Side)
Uneven gaps down the centre of double cabinets or doors catching on adjacent units require lateral correction. This is adjusted using the screw located closest to the door cup on the hinge arm.
Turning this screw clockwise moves the door closer towards the edge of the cabinet carcass. Turning it anti-clockwise moves the door inwards, widening the side gap. When adjusting IKEA hinges on a single door, turn both the top and bottom screws equally to move the whole door, or adjust only one hinge to correct a tilted door.
Step 3: Depth Adjustment (Front-to-Back)
If your cabinet door does not close flush or catches against the carcass edge when swinging open, the depth needs setting. This adjustment is controlled by the rear screw on the hinge arm.
Loosen the rear screw slightly to allow the hinge arm to slide forwards or backwards along the mounting plate. Position the door so that there is an even clearance of roughly 1.5 mm to 2 mm between the door back and the carcass face, then firmly retighten the screw.
Replacing Worn or Non-Soft-Close Hinges
If you have older cabinets with loose mechanisms, stripping screw threads, or non-cushioned action, upgrading to modern replacement hinges is straightforward. Most flat-pack systems use industry-standard 35 mm cup drilling patterns with standard 45 mm or 48 mm screw centres. Fitting quality replacement soft-close concealed hinges allows you to upgrade older doors instantly without redrilling the main cup holes.
Hinge Adjustment Quick Reference
| Adjustment | Screw Location | Action |

| Lateral (Left/Right) | Front screw on hinge arm | Turn clockwise (outwards) or anti-clockwise (inwards) |
| Depth (In/Out) | Rear screw on hinge arm | Loosen, slide arm forwards/backwards, retighten |
