Upgrading the front of a fitted bedroom is one of the most effective ways to modernise an interior without tearing out existing carcass structures. Undertaking a built in wardrobe door replacement allows you to refresh the aesthetic while resolving common issues such as sagging hinges or sticking tracks. To ensure your new panels hang true and operate smoothly, selecting the correct hardware from the outset is essential.
Choosing Between Hinged and Sliding Systems
Before sourcing materials, consider whether your wardrobe relies on traditional swinging panels or a sliding mechanism. Your choice determines the load-bearing requirements and fixing positions on the carcass frame:
- Hinged doors: Offer full access to the wardrobe interior at once. They require standard mounting plates, concealed hinges, and sufficient clearance in the bedroom to swing open freely.
- Sliding doors: Ideal for compact bedrooms where space is at a premium. They utilise top tracks, bottom floor guides or rollers, and bypass channels to let panels slide behind one another.
Concealed Cup Hinges for Wardrobe Doors
When measuring and sourcing hardware for replacement doors for built in wardrobes, standard concealed cup hinges (European-style) are typically the best option. Because wardrobe doors are taller and heavier than kitchen units, specific hardware rules apply:
Cup Diameter and Drilling Depth
The vast majority of modern wardrobe hinges use an industry-standard 35 mm cup diameter. Standard drilling depths usually range between 11.5 mm and 12.5 mm. Always check the thickness of your new doors before boring hinge holes using a Forstner bit to prevent breaking through the front face.
Hinge Quantity per Door
Tall wardrobe panels require multiple mounting points to prevent warping and spread the load along the carcass edge. As a rule of thumb based on standard 18 mm MDF or MFC board:
- Doors up to 1.5 m in height: 3 hinges
- Doors between 1.5 m and 2.0 m: 4 hinges
- Doors exceeding 2.0 m: 4 to 5 hinges
Opt for hinges with integrated soft-close mechanisms and 3-way cam adjustment to make aligning the doors straightforward once mounted.
Sliding Track Kits and Runner Hardware
For sliding installations, the weight of the door dictates the type of runner system required. Top-hung systems carry the full weight on an overhead aluminium track, leaving the floor clear apart from a discrete floor pin guide. Bottom-rolling systems place the load on a bottom track, with top guides merely keeping the door vertical.
When replacing sliding doors, measure the internal frame opening precisely at three points (top, middle, bottom) and ensure your tracks are cut to size using a fine-toothed hacksaw. Always fit anti-jump clips to prevent panels from dislodging during everyday use.
Selecting and Fitting Wardrobe Handles
The final hardware consideration is handle selection. Full-height wardrobes benefit from long profile handles or bar pulls, which provide an ergonomic grip at various heights and add structural rigidity to large doors. For sliding doors, choose recessed flush pulls that sit level with the door surface so the panels can bypass one another without catching.
