Retrofitting Cruciform Mounting Plates: Drilling New Fixing Points in the 32 mm Hole Pattern

System 32 is the worldwide standard in cabinet making, where fixing points for cruciform mounting plates and shelf supports are drilled in an exact 32 mm grid with a hole diameter of 5 mm.

When a cabinet door sags, a hinge has torn out, or a carcase is being constructed from scratch, the fitter faces a precise task: a new cruciform mounting plate must be positioned accurately on the inside of the cabinet. If the fixing points sit just one millimetre too high or too low, the concealed hinge can no longer be adjusted without play later on.

Before putting the drill to work, the exact distances must be understood. The industry agreed on fixed standards so that hinges, runners, and shelves are compatible across manufacturers.

Two dimensions must strictly be maintained when fitting cruciform mounting plates:

  1. The front distance: The distance from the front edge of the cabinet side to the centre of the first hole is standardly exactly 37 mm.
  2. The hole spacing: The distance between the upper and lower holes of the mounting plate is exactly 32 mm.

These holes are typically drilled with a 5 mm diameter to take Euro screws. These specialist screws have a thick core and a blunt thread that draws extremely securely into the pre-drilled material of the chipboard or MDF.

Required Tools and Materials

For precise retrofitting or new installation, the following tools and components are required:

  • Cordless drill/driver
  • Wood drill bit (Ø 5 mm) with brad point
  • Depth stop for the drill bit
  • Bradawl or centre punch
  • Folding rule and vernier calliper
  • Drilling jig for the 32 mm grid
  • New cruciform mounting plates (matching the required overlay)
  • Euro screws (typical dimension: 6.3 x 13 mm)
  • Pencil with a hard lead (H or HB)

Step-by-Step Guide: Drilling the 32 mm Hole Pattern

The following guide assumes that the 35 mm cup hole in the cabinet door already exists and the mounting plate on the carcase must be aligned to match it.

1. Determine the Door Position

First, measure the distance on the cabinet door. Place the vernier calliper against the top edge (or bottom edge) of the door and measure to the exact centre of the 35 mm cup hole. Note down this value.

2. Transfer the Dimension to the Carcase

Transfer the measured dimension to the inside of the cabinet side. Take the reveal into account. If the door is to sit flush with the top of the carcase, you can transfer the dimension 1:1. If the door requires a clearance (reveal) of 2 mm at the top, you must add these 2 mm to the measured value. Mark the calculated height with a fine pencil line on the inside of the carcase. This line marks the exact centre between the two future drill holes of the cruciform mounting plate.

3. Mark the Front Distance and Hole Spacing

Now the 32 mm grid comes into play. From the previously marked centre, measure 16 mm upwards and 16 mm downwards. On these two height lines, measure exactly 37 mm inwards from the front edge of the carcase. The two resulting intersection points are your drill hole centres.

4. Apply the Drilling Jig

To avoid inaccuracies from manual marking, using a jig is strongly recommended. Place the jig against the front edge of the carcase so that the stop sits flush. Align the centre marking of the jig with your initial pencil line (the centre of the hinge). The jig now automatically provides the two drilling points spaced 32 mm apart and 37 mm from the front edge. Secure the jig with a small G-clamp if necessary.

5. Centre-Punch the Drill Points

Use a bradawl to press the marked points lightly into the coating of the chipboard. This prevents the drill bit from slipping on the smooth melamine resin coating during the first few milliseconds of starting up.

6. Set the Depth Stop

Carcase side panels are usually 16 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm thick. A standard Euro screw requires a hole depth of around 12 mm to 13 mm. Set the depth stop on your 5 mm wood drill bit to exactly 13 mm. The depth stop on the drill acts as an invisible stop sign and reliably prevents drilling right through the outside of the cabinet.

7. Carry Out the Drilling

Place the brad point of the wood drill bit into the punched indentations. Drill at high speed but with low feed pressure at an exact 90-degree angle into the material until the depth stop touches the workpiece. Vacuum the drilling dust from the holes.

8. Fix the Cruciform Mounting Plate

Position the new mounting plate. Pay attention to the arrow marking on the plate – this usually needs to point towards the front edge of the carcase. Drive in the Euro screws using a PZ2 screwdriver (Pozidriv) or a cordless screwdriver on a very low torque setting. The screws must tighten securely but must not be overtightened, otherwise the thread in the chipboard will strip.

9. Clip in and Adjust the Hinge

Hang the door by hooking the concealed hinge onto the front lug of the mounting plate and clipping it into place at the back with light pressure (for clip-on hinges) or securing it with a screw (for slide-on hinges). Use the eccentric adjustment screws on the mounting plate and hinge arm to make the final height, depth, and side overlay (gap reveal) adjustments to the door.

Common Installation Mistakes

Even experienced fitters make mistakes when rushing. The following pitfalls should be avoided:

  • Incorrect drill diameter: When using Euro screws, a 5 mm drill bit is mandatory. If a 3 mm drill bit is mistakenly used, the chipboard will split when driving in the thick Euro screw.
  • Confusing the overlay types: A mounting plate for a full overlay (door fully covers the carcase side) often requires a different plate height (e.g. D=0 mm) than an inset application (door sits flush between the carcase sides). The drilling pattern (37/32 mm) remains the same on the carcase, but the thickness of the mounting plate changes.
  • Drilling out of square: A drill hole that is not made at an exact 90-degree angle causes the mounting plate to sit crooked. The hinge cannot then be clipped in without tension, leading to premature wear of the soft-close mechanism.

Alternatives for Stripped Drill Holes

A common reason for retrofitting mounting plates is stripped old holes. When the material of the cabinet panel around the old 5 mm holes is damaged, new screws will no longer hold there. You have two technical solutions:

Solution A: Relocating the hinge Drill a new cup hole into the door using a 35 mm Forstner bit (e.g. 50 mm above or below the old position). Then, as described above, drill a completely new 32 mm hole pattern into the carcase side. The old hole in the door is covered using a plastic blanking plug.

Solution B: Repairing the old holes Drill out the damaged holes in the carcase cleanly using an 8 mm drill bit. Glue 8 mm wooden dowels in flush with the surface. Once the glue has cured, you can drill new 5 mm holes into the solid dowel wood at the exact same location. The 37/32 mm grid is thus perfectly preserved.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions about Hinge Installation

Is there a specific jig for the 110-degree hinges of well-known furniture retailers? As major furniture manufacturers also use fittings from established hardware producers like Blum or Hettich, these hinges are based without exception on the 32 mm system. A standard drilling jig for concealed hinges with dimensions of 37 mm (front distance) and 32 mm (hole spacing) works with absolute precision. A brand-specific custom jig is technically unnecessary.

Can the same jig also be used for shelf supports? Yes. System 32 was developed for precisely this purpose. The rows of holes into which shelf supports are inserted also have a centre-to-centre distance of 32 mm and a diameter of 5 mm. Using an appropriate jig allows line borings for shelves to be produced in exact alignment.

Is the 32 mm grid also suitable for connecting fittings? To an extent. Cam and dowel connectors (often known as Minifix) also frequently use the 32 mm spacing to wooden dowels for the connecting bolt. However, the cam housing requires a 15 mm hole in the surface panel. There are therefore specific drilling jigs for cam connectors that integrate guides for 15 mm Forstner bits alongside the 5 mm holes.

What is the difference between Euro screws and chipboard screws when fitting plates? Euro screws require a 5 mm pilot hole and, due to their thick cylindrical profile, provide an extremely strong hold in industrially drilled hole lines. Chipboard screws (usually Ø 3.5 mm or 4 mm, often with Torx drive) are used when cruciform mounting plates are screwed directly into the timber without system holes. For this purpose, many mounting plates have smaller round holes or slotted holes alongside the large holes for Euro screws.

Why will the door not close after installation? Check whether you have selected the correct cruciform mounting plate. If you install a plate for a half overlay (D=0 mm) on a cabinet that requires a full overlay, the door will collide with the carcase side when closing. Also check the depth adjustment on the hinge arm to ensure the door has sufficient clearance from the carcase (a gap of approx. 1.5 mm to 2 mm is necessary).
