Kitchens made by the manufacturer Alno feature durable carcases, but the moving hardware fittings are subject to natural wear and tear over the years. Older models often lack the cushioning technology that is standard today. When cabinet doors slam or drawers hit the carcase unchecked, replacing the hardware is sensible.

You do not necessarily have to use original parts for retrofitting or repairs. The key factors for a replacement suitable for Alno kitchens are the exact installation dimensions and the hole pattern. By using standardised fittings, modern damping systems can be integrated into existing carcases without the need to drill new holes.

Checking Technical Requirements and Compatibility

Before fitting new hardware, the technical baseline in the cabinet carcase must be determined. System 32 is the universal metric standard in furniture construction that works across manufacturers and is also used by Alno. It defines the distance between drill holes as exactly 32 mm, and the distance from the front line of holes to the front edge of the carcase as 37 mm.

Doors and Hinges

For standard opening doors, the concealed hinge is the central connecting element. To find an alternative to Alno hinges, check the following dimensions:

  • Cup diameter: This is standardly 35 mm. Rarer, smaller variants measure 26 mm.
  • Opening angle: A standard kitchen cabinet usually uses hinges with 95° or 110°. Cabinets with internal pull-outs require wide-angle hinges with 155° or 165°.
  • Mounting type: If the door sits completely in front of the carcase side, you need a full overlay hinge. If two doors share a central partition, a half overlay hinge is required. If the door closes flush between the carcase sides, this is an inset hinge.

Drawers and Pull-Outs

When converting drawers to a cushioned system, the nominal length of the runner is decisive. Measure the depth of the drawer in its closed state from the rear wall to the inner edge of the front. Common lengths in the kitchen range from 400 mm to 550 mm. In addition, you must distinguish whether the runner is designed as a full extension (the drawer can be pulled 100% out of the carcase) or a single extension (approx. 75% extension travel).

Hinges with Integrated Soft-Close

The cleanest way to achieve a soft-closing door is replacing the hinges completely. Concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft close have the hydraulic cylinder built directly into the hinge arm or cup. Mounting is usually tool-free on the existing cruciform mounting plate via a clip mechanism, provided the hole pattern matches.

Add-On Dampers and Push-In Buffers

If the existing hinge is still fully functional, damping can be added retroactively. Door dampers are either clipped directly onto the hinge arm (model-specific) or screwed into the carcase as an independent component. For a minimalist solution against hard slamming, though without active pull-in, simple buffers & dampers made of silicone or plastic can be pressed into a 5 mm drill hole.

Damped Drawer Runners

To replace runners, upgrading to soft-close drawer runners is recommended. These combine a precision ball bearing slide or undermount runner with a self-closing mechanism. For maximum ergonomics in the base cabinet, full extension drawer runners should always be chosen, as they allow complete access to the storage space at the back.

If you are completely reorganising the interior space, pre-assembled systems can also be used. For instance, a 60 cm kitchen cabinet pull-out drawer can be installed in a standard base unit as a replacement for old wooden drawers.

Flap Fittings in Wall Units

For flaps opening upwards, damping is often integrated into the lifting mechanism. Gas struts are used for this purpose. Selecting the right strut is based not on dimensions, but on force in Newtons. A light frame often requires only 60 N, whereas heavy MDF fronts require heavy-duty gas struts with 250 N or more.

Installation and Retrofitting: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing standardised furniture fittings requires precision, but can be completed easily with standard household tools.

Required Tools:

  • Cross-head screwdriver (PZ drive for chipboard screws, PH for sheet metal screws)
  • Tape measure / rule in mm
  • Bradawl or 3 mm wood drill bit

Converting Doors to Soft-Close

  1. Dismantling: Release the door by pressing the clip mechanism at the rear end of the hinge arm. Then unscrew the old concealed hinges from the door.
  2. Inspection: Check the 35 mm cup hole for damage.
  3. Mounting the new hinge: Insert the soft-close hinge square to the door edge and secure it with 3.5 mm or 4 mm chipboard screws.
  4. Hanging: Press the hinge onto the mounting plate remaining in the carcase until it audibly clicks into place.
  5. Adjustment: Use the 3D adjustment (depth, height, and lateral adjustment) via the adjustment screws on the hinge arm to achieve an even gap reveal.

Replacing Drawer Runners

  1. Removal: Pull the drawer out and release it from the old runners (depending on the system, by lifting or operating the release clip).
  2. Dismantling runners: Unscrew the old runners from the inside walls of the carcase.
  3. Positioning new runners: Use the existing holes of the 32 mm drill pattern. Ensure that the new runners are set perfectly level and that the setback from the carcase front edge (usually 37 mm) is maintained.
  4. Fixing: Secure the runners using Euro screws (for 5 mm holes) or chipboard screws.
  5. Inserting the drawer: Slide the box onto the new runners until the self-closing mechanism engages and locks the hardware in place.

Can I combine push-to-open and soft-close? No, generally not. Soft-close dampens the movement and pulls the door shut. In contrast, a push-to-open system (tip-on) relies on a spring that pushes the door open. These two mechanisms work against each other.

How many soft-close hinges do I need per door? On light and small doors (e.g. 700 mm height), it is often sufficient to replace just one hinge with a soft-close variant while leaving one unsprung or standard hinge. On heavy or tall doors (with 3 hinges or more), at least two soft-close hinges should be installed to generate the required braking force.

Why does my retrofitted drawer not close completely? This usually happens if the runner has not been mounted at an exact right angle to the front, or if the internal width of the carcase does not match the drawer box. The clearance tolerance on ball bearing slides is often only 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm. Check the parallelism of the runners with a tape measure.

Are the hole centres on the hinge cup always the same? While the 35 mm cup diameter is widely standardised, the hole spacing of the fixing screws next to the cup (the drill pattern) can vary depending on the manufacturer (e.g. 45 mm, 48 mm, or 52 mm). If the hole pattern does not match, the old holes must be filled and new fixing points marked using a bradawl for the 3.5 mm screws.
