Retrofitting Push-to-Open — Handleless Fronts

A push-to-open system is a mechanical spring trigger that opens a gap for gripping with light pressure on the furniture front, making conventional furniture handles unnecessary.

The trend towards handleless fronts demands precise coordination of furniture fittings. Retrofitting such a mechanism is possible for both hinged doors and drawers, but differs fundamentally in its technical execution. Whilst a separate push catch is often added to cabinet doors, converting drawers generally requires the complete replacement of the drawer runners. This guide walks you through professional installation, correct sizing, and the exact adjustment of the components.

Technical Requirements and How It Works

Before beginning installation, the initial situation inside the cabinet carcase must be analysed. The push-to-open mechanism requires physical travel to trigger. This trigger travel requires a continuous front gap of at least 2 mm to 3 mm between the front edge of the carcase and the back of the furniture front. If the door or drawer sits flush and tight against the carcase, the spring cannot be activated.

In addition, the compatibility of the existing concealed hinges / cabinet hinges must be checked. Standard hinges feature an automatic closing mechanism (retention via a spring). A push catch must work against this spring force. For an optimal result on handleless doors, hinges without springs (free-swinging hinges) or with inverse springs (pushing open) are ideally used.

Required Tools and Materials

For professional retrofitting, you will need the following tools:

  • Cordless drill driver with torque control
  • Cross-head screwdriver or bit in size PZ2 (Pozidriv)
  • Wood drill bit (typically 5 mm for system holes or 10 mm for drill-in push catches)
  • Tape measure or folding rule
  • Try square
  • Bradawl or marking awl to mark drill points
  • Depending on the project: push catches (with magnet or rubber buffer) or new drawer runners

Option A: Converting Cabinet Doors to Push-to-Open

For hinged doors, retrofitting is usually carried out via a push catch that is either surface-mounted (using an adapter plate) or drilled directly into the carcase side.

Step 1: Determine Positioning

The push catch must be fitted on the handle side (opposite the hinge side). Position the component at the height where the door will later be pressed with a hand or knee in daily use. This ensures that the force acts directly on the mechanism and the door does not twist.

Step 2: Fitting the Adapter Plate

If a surface-mounted variant is chosen, fix the cruciform mounting plate or linear adapter plate to the inside of the carcase. For cabinets manufactured according to System 32, use the existing line of holes. The distance from the front hole to the carcase front edge is standardly 37 mm. Screw the plate in place using suitable chipboard screws (e.g. 3.5 x 15 mm).

Step 3: Attach the Catch and Fit the Counterpart

Click the push catch onto the adapter plate. If you are using a version with a magnetic tip, the metal counterpart (strike plate) must be fitted to the inside of the furniture front. Transfer the exact position of the catch onto the front and screw the small plate on flat.

Step 4: Adjust the Front Gap

The catch features a thread in its head. By rotating the tip, you can adjust the length of the pin down to the millimetre. Adjust the tip so that a gap of approx. 2.5 mm to the carcase remains when the door is closed. Only then can the door be pushed in deeply enough to release the spring. Opening angles of common hinges, such as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees, are not impaired by the catch.

Option B: Converting Drawers to Push-to-Open

Retrofitting drawers is technically more demanding. A simple push catch is not sufficient here, as it cannot evenly eject the mass of a loaded drawer. Here, the drawer runners must be replaced with specialised drawer runners push to open. The trigger mechanism is built directly into the runner.

Step 1: Remove Old Runners

Remove the drawer and unscrew the old carcase runners as well as the profiles attached to the drawer. Measure the nominal length of the old runner (typical lengths range between 250 mm - 600 mm). The new runners must have the exact same nominal length.

Step 2: System Selection (Full or Single Extension)

Decide on the appropriate extension type. A full extension runner pulls 100% out of the carcase, making access to the rear area of the drawer easier. A single extension runner opens the path to only around 75%. Also pay attention to the load capacity of the new runners (e.g. 30 kg or 45 kg), depending on the planned contents of the drawer.

Step 3: Fit Carcase Runners

Fasten the new carcase runners to the inside of the cabinet. Pay meticulous attention to horizontal alignment. Use the system holes (5 mm) if present, or screw the runners in place with Euro screws. The setback from the front carcase edge is defined by the runner manufacturer’s specifications (often flush or recessed by 2 mm).

Step 4: Fit Drawer Profiles

Screw the counterparts to the sides or under the base of the drawer (depending on the runner type, e.g. undermount runner or ball bearing runner). Afterwards, place the drawer onto the carcase runners and push it in with light pressure until the locking device audibly engages.

Step 5: Activate Depth Adjustment

Many modern push-to-open runners feature an integrated adjustment wheel for depth adjustment. Turn this wheel to adjust the front gap precisely to 2 mm - 3 mm. The gap pattern should run completely parallel across all drawers.

Common Mistakes During Fitting & Adjustment

Even with careful work, mistakes can adversely affect the opening action. Watch out for these typical pitfalls:

  • Lack of trigger travel: If the front sits too tight against the carcase, the mechanism jams. The front must be able to be pushed inwards. Correct this via the depth adjustment on the hinges or runners.
  • Incorrect hinge choice: Attempting to combine a push catch with concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with soft close inevitably causes problems. These two systems work against one another. The damper pulls the door shut softly and keeps it closed, whilst the push mechanism attempts to force it open. For pure push systems, use unsprung or un-damped hinges.
  • Asymmetrical fitting on wide fronts: On very wide drawers or doors, a central pressure point is often insufficient. If the front is pressed at the corner, it can skew. For drawers, using a synchronisation rod is recommended here to transmit the force to both runners simultaneously.
  • Insufficient spring force: The ejection force is measured in Newtons (N). A heavy drawer requires runners with a correspondingly strong spring, otherwise the front will only open a gap of a few millimetres.

Combined Systems: Push-to-Open with Soft Close

A common technical requirement is the desire for handleless fronts that nevertheless close softly and quietly. As mentioned, classic push catches and simple soft-close hinges are physical opposites.

However, highly complex mechanical solutions exist that combine both functions in a single component. Such a system works like a tensioned clockwork mechanism: when manually pushing the drawer closed, the spring is primed for the next opening process, whilst simultaneously a rotary damper engages in the final section of the closing path and cushions the movement. This mechanism is found on special versions of drawer runners with soft close engineered specifically for handleless fronts. Adjusting these systems requires utmost precision regarding hole spacings, as tolerances for the trigger travel are extremely tight.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Can I retrofit push-to-open to any cabinet door? In principle, yes. There simply needs to be enough room for the push catch inside the carcase. However, on doors with strong closing springs, a catch with high ejection force must be chosen, or the hinges must be replaced with springless variants.

Why does my drawer only open a few millimetres after pressing? This is usually due to an insufficient front gap or an overloaded drawer. If the spring force of the runner does not match the mass of the drawer, there is not enough energy for a complete ejection. Check the depth adjustment and increase the gap to at least 2.5 mm.

Do hinges on a handleless door need a specific opening angle? No, the push-to-open mechanism is independent of the opening angle. You can use it with standard hinges just as well as with specialised solutions, such as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 90 degrees for blind corners or concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 155 degrees for wide-angle doors (e.g. for cabinets with internal drawers).

What is the difference between a magnetic catch and a rubber buffer? A magnetic catch additionally holds the door securely in the closed position. This is mandatory especially with hinges without a self-closing spring, as the door would otherwise stand slightly open. A catch with a simple rubber buffer is used when the existing hinges still possess their own spring that keeps the door closed.
