Roller Runners vs. Ball Bearing Runners: Drawer Runner Systems Compared

Roller runners and ball bearing runners are the two fundamental mechanical systems for drawer runners. Whilst roller runners glide on steel tracks via ball-bearing plastic rollers and mostly operate as single extension runners, ball bearing runners utilise a telescopic system with steel balls that allows for higher load capacities and full drawer extension.

What exactly are roller runners and ball bearing runners?

In professional cabinet making and during the installation of drawer runners, a distinction is made between two primary running mechanisms that differ fundamentally in their construction and kinematics.

The roller runner consists of two epoxy-coated steel profiles per side (carcass rail and drawer rail). Movement is achieved via running rollers, which are usually made of wear-resistant plastic (polyamide). Due to the weight of the drawer and a slight slope at the rear section of the rail, many models feature a mechanical self-closing effect across the final few centimetres.

The ball bearing runner has a more complex design. The mechanism functions like a linear rolling-element bearing: small steel balls run within ball cages between interlocking, galvanised steel profiles (typically three segments). This construction prevents drawer racking and ensures high lateral stability, even with wide cabinet widths.

Design types and extension options

The choice of runner system significantly determines ease of operation and access to the drawer contents.

  • Extension length: Drawer runners roller runners are generally designed as a single extension (partial extension). This means that around 25 % of the drawer remains inside the cabinet. Ball bearing runners, on the other hand, are fitted as standard as drawer runners full extension, allowing the drawer to be pulled out 100 %.
  • Additional mechanisms: Modern ball bearing runners can be equipped with various convenience features. A distinction is made between drawer runners with soft-close (also known as soft-close), which cushion the momentum when closing and pull the drawer shut gently, and drawer runners push to open for handleless fronts. These two systems are based on opposing mechanical principles and cannot be combined within a single runner.

Dimensions, load capacity, and technical specifications

Accurate installation dimensions and load limits are essential for the fitter. Both systems generally use the System 32 standard for carcass drilling (line bore holes at 32 mm centres).

  • Installation width (clearance): For standard ball bearing runners, an installation clearance of exactly 12.7 mm (often rounded to 13 mm) must be allowed per side. For roller runners, this varies depending on the manufacturer, but is often 12.5 mm.
  • Lengths: Nominal lengths are based on the carcass depth. Short runners for bathroom furniture or bedside tables start at drawer runners 250 mm. For standard kitchen base units, lengths such as drawer runners 500 mm are typically used. The range available from specialist suppliers often extends up to 800 mm.
  • Load capacity: Roller runners are designed for standard loads of 20 kg to 25 kg. Standard ball bearing runners often carry up to 45 kg. For workshop cabinets or deep pan drawers in the kitchen, drawer runners heavy duty are required, which manage load capacities from 80 kg to over 130 kg thanks to thicker steel and more robust ball cages.

Application and selection

The decision between the systems depends on the requirements of the cabinet. Roller runners are characterised by very simple assembly and removal – the drawer is simply lifted and taken out. They are suitable for light desk pedestals, simple chests of drawers, or as cost-effective replacement parts for repairs.

Ball bearing runners are the preferred choice for demanding projects. They offer smoother running under heavy loads and, thanks to full extension, provide unhindered access to the entire contents of the drawer. For removal, a small release lever on the rail must usually be operated.
