Shelf Supports: Push-In Pins vs. Locking Shelf Supports
A shelf support holds internal shelves inside a furniture carcase. A simple push-in pin supports the shelf loosely, whereas a shelf support with a locking mechanism mechanically secures the panel against slipping or tilting.
What exactly is a shelf support?
A shelf support is a functional hardware fitting inserted into pre-drilled holes in cabinet side panels to hold shelving. The vertical load from the shelf and its stored contents is transferred directly through the support into the carcase wall. In professional furniture manufacturing, the hole spacing for these fittings is almost universally based on System 32, a standardised line of holes spaced exactly 32 mm apart from hole centre to hole centre.
Types and variants: push-in pins vs. locking supports
When engineering furniture carcases, technical distinction is made between loose and fixed resting points.
The classic push-in pin
The push-in pin (often called a cylindrical pin or spoon shelf support) is the simplest type of shelf rest. It consists of a solid, cylindrical pin inserted into the side wall and a flat or slightly rounded surface for the timber to rest on.
- Advantage: Tool-free and extremely fast height adjustment along the line of holes.
- Disadvantage: The shelf only rests loosely. Uneven loading on the front edge (leverage effect) can cause the panel to tilt.
Shelf supports with locking mechanisms
This version firmly secures the shelf to the support. This is achieved either via a small retaining pin that slots into a blind hole on the underside of the shelf, or via an integrated clamping mechanism.
- Area of application: Essential for cabinets that are moved frequently, as well as for lightweight shelves that tend to shift when items are removed.
- Special variant: Dedicated glass shelf supports frequently feature a soft plastic screw or a rubberised coating to clamp the glass panel while protecting it from scratches.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
Accurate pin diameters are crucial for a precise fit. A clearance of just a few tenths of a millimetre causes instability and can permanently damage the drilled hole over time.
- Hole diameter: Standard sizes are 3 mm or 5 mm.
- Pin length: Typically 7 mm - 10 mm, ensuring sufficient grip inside a 16 mm or 19 mm thick chipboard panel without breaking through the side wall.
- Load capacity: A solid cast steel shelf support carries between 15 kg - 25 kg per unit, depending on the model. Using four supports provides a high overall load capacity, provided the shelf material itself does not sag.
Application and selection
Choosing the right fitting depends largely on the shelf material and the expected dynamic load. Just like a wall plug in masonry, the support must sit with zero play inside the drilled hole so the structure does not yield under load. For very heavy loads in open shelving systems, fitters often opt for long shelf brackets that screw into or hook onto wall rails, rather than relying on small pins in timber panels.
If a shelf must serve as a structural fixed shelf to pull the cabinet walls together and stiffen the carcase, a locking shelf support is not sufficient. In this case, cam lock connectors or glued dowels must be used instead.
