The Cup Diameter and Drilling Pattern

The core of the door attachment is the concealed cup hinge. In most European kitchen systems, including older models, the cup hole in the door has a diameter of 35 mm. Smaller versions with 26 mm are used less frequently. In addition to the diameter, the drilling pattern for the fixing screws is relevant. The distance between the screw holes to the left and right of the cup is typically 45 mm or 52 mm. As long as the cup diameter matches, differing screw holes in timber-based materials can be redrilled with very little effort.

The Cabinet Door Overlay Type

2. Complete Replacement of Concealed Cup Hinges

If the joint is worn out or the spring is broken, a complete replacement is the technically cleanest solution. Modern concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (Soft Close) have the hydraulic cylinder integrated invisibly inside the hinge arm or cup. They are an outstanding alternative to defective Mepla parts, provided that the cup diameter of 35 mm and the overlay type match. The opening angle for standard kitchen doors is usually 110°.

3. Upgrading Drawers to Soft-Close

When giving a kitchen a comprehensive overhaul, drawer runners often come into focus as well. Old plastic roller runners often run loudly and roughly. Compatible drawer runners with damping can be installed here instead. Attention should be paid to whether a single extension runner (drawer opens to approx. 75%) or a drawer runners full extension (100% access right to the back panel) is required. Common lengths in kitchen base units range from 450 mm - 500 mm.

Replacing fittings requires precision, but can be completed quickly with the right preparation.

Detach the old door from the mounting plate by loosening the fixing screw or releasing the clip mechanism. Then unscrew the old hinges from the door. Measure the diameter of the cup hole (target value: 35 mm) and the spacing of the mounting plate drill holes in the carcase (target value: 32 mm).

Step 2: Installing the New Hinges

Insert the new hinge into the existing cup hole. Ensure that the hinge arm sits at an exact 90-degree angle to the door edge. Secure the cup using chipboard screws (often 3.5 x 16 mm or 4 x 16 mm). If the old screw holes are stripped, fill them beforehand with wood glue and a matchstick, or use slightly thicker screws.

Step 3: Attaching the Cruciform Mounting Plate

Screw the new mounting plates into the existing 32 mm drill holes inside the cabinet. The plates can often be adjusted in height via slotted holes.

Clip the door onto the mounting plate using the hinge arm (clip-on technology) or slide the arm on and tighten the fixing screw. Now carry out the 3D adjustment:

  • Depth adjustment: Changes the gap between the door and the carcase.
  • Height adjustment: Carried out on the cruciform mounting plate to align the door vertically.
  • Side adjustment: Turning the front screw in the hinge arm moves the door to the left or right to achieve parallel gaps with neighbouring doors.
