System 32 in Furniture: What Does the 32 mm Line Boring System Mean?
System 32 is an internationally standardised construction principle in cabinet making based on a vertical row of holes. The distance between the hole centres is exactly 32 mm. This industrial standard enables universal, millimetre-accurate mounting of furniture fittings, concealed hinges, drawer runners, and shelf supports within a cabinet carcass.
What Exactly Is System 32?
System 32 functions as a universal coordinate system for building cabinet furniture. It was developed in the post-war era to standardise industrial furniture production and simplify the machine processing of carcass components. Instead of drilling custom holes for every individual fitting, the side panels of a cabinet are provided with a continuous or partial line of holes.
Furniture manufacturers and hardware producers align their products precisely to this grid. The fixing points of hinge mounting plates, drawer slides, and hanging systems are designed to fit exactly into the pre-drilled holes spaced at intervals of 32 mm (or multiples thereof, such as 64 mm, 96 mm).
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
To apply the system correctly, specific dimensions must be maintained alongside the vertical spacing:
- Hole spacing (grid dimension): Vertically, exactly 32 mm from hole centre to hole centre.
- Hole diameter: Standard 5 mm. This dimension is precisely sized for shelf supports and specialised fixing screws (Euro screws). Less commonly, 3 mm drill holes are used purely as pilot markings for wood screws.
- Front setback (leading edge): The first line of holes generally begins exactly 37 mm behind the front edge of the cabinet carcass side panel.
- Rear setback: The rear line of holes is usually positioned at a distance of 37 mm from the carcass back panel, depending on the depth of the fitting used.
- Drilling depth: For standard chipboard with a thickness of 16 mm or 19 mm, the drilling depth (blind hole) is usually 13 mm.
Applications and Benefits in Cabinet Making
For joiners and installers, the line boring system significantly reduces measuring effort. The standardised spacing ensures that components remain level and parallel to each other.
The grid system particularly demonstrates its advantages during the installation of drawer systems. Carcass runners for a full extension or single extension feature hole patterns standardised precisely to the 32 mm grid. This allows the runners to be secured directly into the side panel using Euro screws without time-consuming marking out. For more complex kitchen fittings, such as multi-compartment waste separation systems or pull-out internal drawers, manufacturers also utilise these standardised fixing points.
Similarly, mounting plates (cruciform mounting plates) for a concealed cup hinge are screwed directly into the 5 mm drill holes. The continuous grid pattern also keeps the setup flexible: shelves can subsequently be adjusted in height, or additional drawer systems can be retrofitted without the need for new tools.
Fastening Technology in the 32 mm Grid
Specialised screws are used for mounting into the 5 mm line of holes. The Euro screw features a thread diameter designed to grip securely into the hole, ensuring exceptionally high pull-out strength in chipboard or MDF. Standard countersunk wood screws (with a diameter of 3.5 mm or 4 mm, for example) do not achieve adequate grip in 5 mm holes and must not be used here for load-bearing fittings.
