What is a Euro Screw? Dimensions and 32 mm Hole Pattern in Cabinet Making
A Euro screw is a specialised, thread-forming fixing screw designed for cabinet making that is precisely matched to pre-drilled 5 mm holes in the 32 mm system. It provides a secure fixing for hardware such as hinge mounting plates or drawer runners in chipboard and MDF, as its specialised thread delivers extremely high pull-out resistance.
What exactly is a Euro screw?
In contrast to standard wood screws and furniture screws, a Euro screw does not have a sharp point, but rather a blunt end. It is not designed to drill its own hole into the material. Instead, it is driven into industrially or manually pre-drilled blind holes.
The screw thread is cut particularly deep and steep. When driven in, it forms a mating thread directly in the engineered wood panel (usually chipboard). This creates a solid mechanical interlock that reliably withstands the heavy leverage forces of hinges or the weight of fully loaded drawer runners.
The 32 mm system and the Euro screw
The 32 mm system functions as a standardised coordinate system within cabinet carcasses. It consists of a continuous line of holes spaced at exactly 32 mm intervals. The distance from the front edge of the cabinet carcass to the first row of holes is 37 mm as standard.
The diameter of these system holes is globally standardised at 5 mm. The Euro screw is the fastener engineered specifically for this hole diameter. It automatically centres the fitting in the hole during insertion, ensuring millimetre-accurate alignment.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
When choosing the right screw for fittings, the dimensions are strictly defined. Deviations can result in poor hold or cause damage to the hardware.
- Drill hole diameter: 5 mm
- Thread outer diameter: typically 6.3 mm (less commonly 6.0 mm)
- Lengths: The most common lengths range from 10 mm - 16 mm (standard sizes are 11 mm, 13 mm, and 15 mm). The choice of length depends on the panel thickness (usually 16 mm or 19 mm) and the thickness of the fitting.
- Head shape: Frequently designed as a countersunk head or a flat pan/raised head, ensuring the screw sits flush in the fitting without obstructing moving parts.
- Drive: Typically cross recess, mostly suitable for PZ2 wood screws (Pozidriv). Less commonly PZ3.
Application and selection during installation
Euro screws are always used when heavy mechanical components need to be fastened to the interior side of a cabinet carcass. These primarily include carcass runners for modern drawer systems as well as cruciform mounting plates for concealed cup hinges.
During installation, take care not to overtighten the screw. A cordless screwdriver should be set to a low torque, because excessive force can strip the chipboard core, leaving the screw without any grip. The materials used are usually nickel-plated or zinc-plated steel, similar to regular zinc wood screws, to prevent corrosion.
If no 5 mm line of holes is available, the fitting can alternatively be secured using standard chipboard screws. In such cases, the installer generally opts for 4 mm or 3.5 mm countersunk wood screws that are driven straight into the wood without pre-drilling. However, the load-bearing capacity is lower than with the standardised Euro variant.
