Height-adjustable furniture feet are load-bearing fittings that enable millimetre-precise levelling of cabinets via an integrated threaded pin. The most common metric thread sizes for furniture construction are M8 and M10. Fastening into solid timber or wood-based panels strictly requires a suitable threaded insert to reliably absorb compression and shear forces.
What Exactly Are Height-Adjustable Furniture Feet with Threads?
An adjustable furniture foot generally consists of a stationary glide or foot section and a metric threaded pin. By screwing this pin into or out of a mating thread anchored in the piece of furniture, the distance between the floor and the cabinet base can be precisely adjusted. This operates on the principle of a mechanical levelling screw and serves to compensate for uneven floors, ensuring that wardrobes or chests of drawers are completely level. This prevents carcasses from twisting or door gaps from becoming uneven. For this function, fitters rely on adjustable furniture feet.
Thread Dimensions and Tolerances in Furniture Making
Standardised metric ISO threads are used in European furniture making. The designation indicates the external diameter of the thread in millimetres.
- M6: Used for lightweight carcasses, small shelving units or decorative feet. The load capacity is limited.
- M8: The clear industry standard for classic furniture feet. The M8 thread provides the optimum compromise between drill-hole size in timber and high shear strength. The standard thread pitch here is 1.25 mm.
- M10: Used for heavy-duty wardrobes or high-load applications. Height-adjustable table legs also frequently use an M10 thread to absorb the lateral leverage forces of a free-standing table. The pitch is 1.5 mm.
Threads are typically manufactured to tolerance class 6g (for the bolt) and 6H (for the nut). This flank clearance ensures that the foot can still be turned under load without jamming in the thread path or exhibiting excessive radial play.
The Mating Part: Threaded Inserts and Bushings
A metric thread cannot be cut directly into chipboard or MDF, as the material would tear out. Force transmission requires a connecting component: the threaded insert.
- Screw-in inserts: These feature a coarse, self-tapping external wood thread and a metric internal thread (e.g. for an M8 threaded insert). They are mostly made of die-cast zinc or steel.
- Pronged tee nuts: These are hammered in from the inside of the cabinet bottom panel. Prongs grip into the timber. When the foot is tightened, the nut presses firmly into the material.
- Plastic inserts: A threaded insert for plastic or entirely plastic-made bushings are frequently press-fitted into pre-drilled holes. They are suitable for lighter furniture or for tubes into which a foot is inserted.

Depending on visibility and load requirements, specialists distinguish between various designs:
- Visible feet: Design is crucial here. Metal furniture feet with integrated threads are often used on sofas or contemporary sideboards. The adjustment range (stroke) is usually limited to 10 mm - 15 mm here so as not to disrupt the aesthetic.
- Concealed feet: For kitchens or large wardrobes, adjustable plinth feet are fitted behind a plinth panel. These are mostly manufactured from high-strength plastic. Here, adjustment is not carried out via a metal threaded pin, but via a coarse plastic thread on the foot tube itself, which allows adjustment ranges of 20 mm - 50 mm.
Application and Professional Installation
Installing furniture feet with threaded pins requires precise pilot holes for the threaded bushing. The drill diameter is based on the external diameter of the insert, not the internal metric dimension.
- Mark the drilling position (maintain adequate edge distance to prevent the chipboard from splitting).
- Drill the hole (for an M8 screw-in insert, depending on wood density and the outer insert diameter, a drill bit of 10 mm or 10.5 mm diameter is usually required).
- Screw in or tap in the threaded bushing perpendicular to the surface.
- Screw in the furniture foot and position the cabinet.
- Level the unit by turning the foot base (often using an open-ended spanner on the hexagonal section).
