Automatic Soft-Close: How Does Hinge Damping Work?
The automatic soft-close mechanism in hinges is a hydraulic system that brakes the closing movement of cabinet doors. A small oil-filled cylinder absorbs the kinetic energy of the door over the final centimetres and pulls it silently and gently against the cabinet carcass, minimising material wear and slamming noise.
What exactly is the automatic soft-close mechanism?
At its core, the system relies on a hydraulic damper fitted inside the hinge arm or hinge cup. As soon as the door reaches a specific closing angle, the damping mechanism engages. A piston presses against a viscous medium, typically silicone oil, which flows through a tiny valve. The resistance of the oil acts like a car shock absorber, absorbing the impact energy.
In parallel, the integrated spring inside the hinge ensures that the door is pulled fully and flush against the carcass after deceleration. This function differs fundamentally from systems such as push-to-open, which are designed for handleless fronts and push the door open on press.
Types of damping in cabinet hinges
Damping is implemented mechanically in furniture design in several ways:
- Integrated damping: The hydraulic cylinder is permanently built into the joint of the fitting. Concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (Soft Close) provide a compact design. The damping force can often be deactivated via a small switch on the hinge arm, which is necessary for lightweight or narrow doors.
- Clip-on dampers: A separate component that is retrofitted by clipping onto the hinge arm.
- Additional damping units: When standard hinges without an automatic mechanism are used, separate door dampers can be installed as drill-in or adapter solutions directly into the carcass side panel.
Damping works regardless of the door overlay. It is available for full overlay, half overlay (twin application), and inset doors.

The mechanical characteristics of the damping are closely linked to the geometry of the hinge. Standard concealed cup hinges feature a cup diameter of 35 mm, whilst smaller fronts use 26 mm. The drilling depth for the cup is usually 11.5 mm - 13 mm.
The point at which damping engages depends on the opening angle. On classic versions such as concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees, deceleration begins at around 30°. For heavy fronts made of MDF or solid timber, three to four hinges are generally required per door to avoid overloading the damping capacity. For very light doors, it is often sufficient to deactivate the integrated damping on one of the two hinges so that the door does not close too slowly.
