Cam Lock Connector: What Is It? Design & Function Explained
A cam lock connector is a two-part furniture fitting comprising a cylindrical cam casing and a connecting bolt (dowel). By turning the cam, an internal curved ramp pulls in the bolt head and locks it firmly. This provides a stable, right-angled, and fully demountable joint between engineered wood panels.
What Exactly Is a Cam Lock Connector?
In industrial furniture manufacturing and professional joinery, this fitting is an absolute industry standard. It falls into the broader category of carcass connectors and is primarily used to join side panels to shelves, top panels, or base panels. The system operates concealed within the panels, leaving no visible screw heads on the exterior of the furniture carcass. The system requires two precisely matched components that interlock during assembly:
- Cam casing: A cylindrical component inserted into a blind hole in the horizontal panel. It features an asymmetrical internal profile (the cam) and a drive slot on the top.
- Connecting bolt (also called a dowel pin or tie bolt): A steel pin screwed into the vertical panel. It has a profiled head that fits precisely into the side opening of the cam casing.
Locking and Releasing the Joint
When assembling the panels, the head of the connecting bolt enters the cam casing. Using a screwdriver, the casing is rotated clockwise by approximately 180° to 210°. The internal curved track grips the bolt head and draws the panel edges tightly together with high clamping force.
To release these furniture connectors, a half-turn anti-clockwise is sufficient. The clamping mechanism releases the bolt, allowing the carcass to be dismantled without causing damage.
Material and Drive Types
In professional applications, the casing is manufactured from die-cast zinc. This material offers the necessary tensile strength to keep the panels under constant tension without breaking under load. The drive is typically a cross-recess, usually PZ2 or PZ3 (Pozidriv), or less frequently a hexagon socket.

- Bolt thread: The bolts feature either a direct wood thread (often 5 mm diameter) or a metric thread (e.g. M6) for use with an insert nut.
Usage & Installation Notes
These specialised carcass connectors are used wherever cabinets or shelving units need to be designed for flat-pack assembly and disassembly. Because the cam itself primarily generates tensile force and cannot withstand shear loads, it is always installed in combination with traditional wooden dowels (usually 8 mm diameter) in practice. The wooden dowels handle accurate alignment and static loads, whilst the cam pulls the components tightly together.
For exact positioning of the drill holes according to the System 32 standard, a drilling jig is indispensable. Only when the blind hole for the casing and the edge hole for the bolt are perfectly aligned will the joint close flush.
