Carcass Connectors — What Are They? Types & Uses in Furniture Construction
A carcass connector is a mechanical hardware fitting that creates a friction-locked and durable join between two furniture components, usually side panels and shelves. In modern cabinet making, these systems allow for concealed, stable, and frequently demountable assembly of wardrobes and shelving units without the need for glue.
What Exactly Is a Carcass Connector?
When assembling cabinet furniture, the corner joint is the most structurally critical point. The connector takes on the task of absorbing tensile and shearing forces, ensuring the right-angled alignment of sheet materials (such as chipboard or MDF). It generally consists of at least two components, for example a dowel pin and a housing. By rotating or snapping into place, the components are fixed securely. This functions like an invisible vice, pulling the wooden panels flush against each other. Unlike traditional gluing or wooden dowelling, this technique allows furniture to be disassembled non-destructively.
Types and Variants
In joinery and industrial furniture manufacturing, various systems are used:
- Cam lock connectors (eccentric connectors): The standard choice for flat-pack furniture construction. The system consists of a round cam housing and a connecting bolt. By turning the cam, the bolt is pulled tight and locked into place.
- Direct connectors: These are specialised wood screws and furniture screws with a blunt thread and a centring head (frequently referred to as Confirmat screws). They cut directly into the pre-drilled timber panel.
- Trapezoidal brackets: A surface-mounted connector made of plastic or die-cast zinc. It is not drilled into the edge, but rather screwed directly onto the surface and tightened using a central tension bolt. Ideal for retrofitting or face panels.
- Single-piece plastic connectors: These are often pressed or hammered in, locking together via a wedged slot joint.
Dimensions, Standards and Typical Values
Processing professional furniture connectors requires precision. Drilling patterns in the furniture industry rely almost entirely on the System 32 (a series of holes spaced in a 32 mm grid).
Important technical parameters during installation include:
- Drilling diameter for cam housing: Typically 15 mm.
- Drilling depth for cam housing: Depending on panel thickness, usually 12 mm to 14 mm.
- Drilling diameter for connecting bolt: As a rule, 5 mm for the thread.
- Panel thicknesses: The connectors are matched precisely to standard board thicknesses such as 15 mm, 16 mm, 18 mm, or 19 mm.
- Drive types: Screw fittings primarily use PZ (Pozidriv) or TX (Torx) to transfer high torque without slipping. PH (Phillips) is rarely used here due to poorer force transmission.
Application & Selection
The choice of the right system depends on the planned structure. For large wardrobes that need to remain demountable, a cam lock connector is indispensable. If a carcass (such as a small under-desk mobile pedestal) is permanently pressed or fixed, direct connectors are the more economical option.
When designing the bottom panel of the carcass, the position of the feet must also be carefully planned. Especially when using adjustable furniture legs, the mounting plates of the feet must not clash with the horizontal drill holes for the carcass connectors.
