Surface-Mounted Hinge vs. Concealed Cup Hinge: Hinge Types Without Cup Drilling

A concealed cup hinge strictly requires precise drilling into the door leaf, known as a cup hole, usually with a diameter of 35 mm. In contrast, a surface-mounted hinge requires no cup hole at all and is screwed directly onto the surface. While the concealed cup hinge is the industry standard in modern furniture construction, the surface-mounted version serves as a practical problem solver for very thin front panels.

What is the Exact Difference?

The kinematics and installation methods of both fittings differ fundamentally. The classic concealed cup hinge consists of two main components: the hinge arm, which is clipped or screwed onto a mounting plate on the carcase, and the hinge cup, which is recessed into the door. This design enables a high load capacity and precise three-dimensional adjustment (height, depth, lateral overlay).

A surface-mounted hinge does not have a cup. It acts on the furniture like a surface bracket, where both wings are screwed directly onto the inside of the cabinet door and the carcase side. Because there is no deep anchoring within the material, the load capacity is lower and adjustment options after installation are often limited to slotted screw holes.

Concealed Cup Hinge: The Industry Standard

For nearly all classic cabinet carcase combinations, joiners and fitters rely on concealed cup hinges. They offer the greatest variety of opening angles and door overlay types.

Overlay types: The choice of hinge defines the position of the door relative to the carcase. A concealed cup hinge for full overlay covers the carcase side panel almost completely. With a half overlay, two doors share a single partition panel. A concealed cup hinge for inset doors allows the door to sit flush between the carcase sides.
Opening angle: The standard for basic cabinet doors is 110-degree concealed cup hinges. For internal drawers or barrier-free access, wide-angle hinges are required, typically 165-degree concealed cup hinges.
Integrated damping: Modern fittings incorporate a cylinder within the hinge arm. A concealed cup hinge with damping decelerates the closing door and gently pulls it shut against the carcase (soft-close).

Surface-Mounted Hinge: The Option Without Cup Drilling

Surface-mounted hinges are primarily used when the material thickness of the front panel does not permit cup drilling. A standard hole for 35 mm concealed cup hinges requires a milling depth of approximately 11.5 mm to 13 mm. If the core material is thinner than 15 mm, the Forstner bit would pierce right through the front. This is where the surface-mounted hinge comes into play. It is also a functional alternative for retrofitting when no specialist tools are available.

Dimensions, Standards and Typical Values

When planning cabinet doors, fixed technical parameters must be observed when selecting the hinge:

Cup diameter (cup hinge): Standard 35 mm. For very light or narrow doors, mini cup hinges with 26 mm are available.
Drilling pattern: Describes the distance between the screw holes next to the cup. Common spacings in Europe are 45 mm or 52 mm.
Material thickness (front panel): At least 15 mm - 16 mm for cup hinges. Surface-mounted hinges can be used on material thicknesses starting from 10 mm.
Fixing: The mounting plates on the carcase often follow System 32, a standardised hole line pattern with a 32 mm hole spacing and a 37 mm distance from the front edge.

Application and Selection

The choice between a surface-mounted hinge and a concealed cup hinge depends on the furniture piece. When building kitchen cabinet runs or large-scale wardrobes, concealed cup hinges are essential. Only the cup design withstands the leverage forces of heavy MDF or chipboard fronts over years of use without tearing out. Surface-mounted hinges remain reserved for specific applications, such as very delicate bathroom cabinets, lightweight plywood doors in campervan conversions, or as a quick repair solution when the material around an old cup hole has completely broken away.
