Slide-On vs. Clip-On: Concealed Hinge Mounting Methods
Slide-on and clip-on mechanisms represent the two most common methods for connecting a concealed hinge to the mounting plate inside a cabinet carcass. In classic slide-on technology, the hinge arm is pushed onto the plate and secured with a screw. Modern clip-on technology, by contrast, allows for tool-free, audible snapping of the hinge onto the cruciform mounting plate.
What Exactly Is the Difference Between Slide-On and Clip-On Technology?
When joiners or fitters install cabinet doors, the connection consists of two main components: the concealed hinge in the door and the cruciform mounting plate on the interior wall of the carcass. The manner in which these two components are joined during final assembly is defined by slide-on or clip-on technology.
The clip-on mechanism operates mechanically like a bicycle quick-release skewer, whilst the slide-on mechanism resembles a classic nut-and-bolt connection.
With slide-on technology (often referred to simply as slide-on), the hinge arm features a slot. During installation, this arm is pushed under the head of the fixing screw on the mounting plate. The screw must then be tightened using a screwdriver (typically PZ or TX).
With clip-on technology (clip-on), there is no need for screwing during door installation. The hinge arm is placed onto the front of the mounting plate and engaged by applying light pressure to the rear section of the hinge. A distinct click signals secure locking. Via a small lever or release button at the rear end of the hinge arm, the connection can be detached just as easily without any tools.
Technical Details and Installation Process
Regardless of the connection method to the mounting plate, both variants generally require a cup hole in the cabinet door. The mounting plate itself is usually screwed to the carcass side within the standardised System 32 grid.
Procedure for slide-on technology:
- Guide the door with the hinge arm towards the mounting plate.

- For multi-door units or large fronts with three to four hinges, this process often requires a second person to hold the door whilst the screws are tightened.
Procedure for clip-on technology:
- Position the door.
- Hook the hinge arm onto the front edge of the mounting plate.
- Press the rear hinge arm until it engages.
- Even heavy doors can be installed by a single person, as the hinge bears the weight immediately after clicking into place.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
The choice of fastening method is independent of the opening angle or the door overlay type. Both slide-on and clip-on hinges are available for diverse geometric requirements:

Usage and Selection for Installation
In professional cabinet making and among high-quality concealed hinges / cabinet hinges, clip-on technology has established itself as the standard. The decisive technical benefit lies in the massive time savings during assembly and disassembly, particularly for large cabinets with multiple doors. Furthermore, the set gap adjustment (height, depth, overlay) is completely preserved when unclipping and re-clipping the door.
Slide-on technology is nowadays found primarily on older existing furniture, as replacement parts for repairs, or in the very price-sensitive segment. When replacing a defective hinge, it is essential to check which mounting plate is fitted in the carcass, as slide-on hinges do not fit onto clip-on mounting plates and vice versa.
