Clip-on vs Slide-on Mounting: Concealed Hinge Fixing Types Explained
Clip-on mounting and slide-on mounting denote the two mechanical fixing methods used to connect a concealed hinge to the mounting plate inside a cabinet carcass. With slide-on mounting, the hinge arm is pushed onto the plate and secured with a fixing screw. With clip-on mounting, the hinge clicks into place on the mounting plate without tools by applying light pressure.
What Exactly Distinguishes the Fixing Methods?
To attach cupboard doors reliably to the carcass, concealed hinges / cabinet hinges always consist of two main components: the actual hinge with the hinge cup, and the mounting plate (usually a cruciform mounting plate). The cup is set into a drilled hole in the door – the standard diameter in modern cupboards here is 35 mm concealed hinges. The mounting plate is screwed onto the internal side wall of the cabinet.
The way in which the hinge arm is secured to this plate defines the mounting system. Two technical standards have established themselves across the industry.
Slide-on Mounting
Slide-on mounting is the traditional and mechanically simplest variant. The hinge arm is provided with a recess at its rear end.
- Mounting process: The arm is pushed from the front under the retaining screw of the mounting plate.
- Fixing: As soon as the correct position is reached, the screw must be tightened with a screwdriver.
- Characteristics: This system requires tools to hang or remove the door. It is robust and is frequently used for basic fittings.
Clip-on Mounting (Click-on)
Clip-on mounting represents the modern advancement and allows a tool-free connection between hinge and plate.
- Mounting process: The hinge is positioned at the front of the mounting plate.
- Fixing: By applying light pressure to the rear section of the hinge arm, the mechanism engages audibly – similar to a ski boot clicking into its binding.
- Characteristics: The door can be released again in seconds by operating a small release lever at the rear hinge end. This is a massive advantage for the fitter, particularly with tall cupboard doors featuring three or more hinges. Often, these modern systems are designed directly as concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (soft close), as the damper cylinder finds space inside the more voluminous hinge arm.
Dimensions, Standards, and Technical Compatibility
Regardless of the chosen fixing method, the basic routing dimensions and overlay types remain identical.
- Opening angle: Both systems are available for standard angles such as 110-degree concealed hinges / cabinet hinges as well as for wide-angle hinges, for example 165-degree concealed hinges / cabinet hinges.
- Overlay types: Whether the door is mounted as full overlay (corner overlay concealed hinges), half overlay (twin overlay concealed hinges), or inset (inset concealed hinges) has no influence on the choice between clip-on and slide-on mounting. The overlay type is determined by the crank of the hinge arm, not by the fixing mechanism.
- Hole series: The mounting plates of both systems are typically standardised to System 32, meaning the hole spacing is 32 mm.
Application & Selection
The decision between clip-on and slide-on mounting depends on the project profile. For static furniture items whose doors remain permanently mounted after initial assembly, slide-on mounting is a functional and practical solution.
However, whenever doors need to be adjusted more frequently, removed for cleaning, or dismantled during moves, the clip-on technique is superior. Also, during single-person installation of large, heavy MDF or solid wood doors, the tool-free click engagement minimises the risk of damage to the carcass, as the door does not have to be held in position with one hand while the other guides a screwdriver.
