Cupboards vs Cabinets: What Is the Difference?

While the terms are often used interchangeably in everyday conversation, understanding the exact difference between cupboard and cabinet construction is vital when planning a joinery project or choosing replacement fittings. In British terminology and traditional cabinetmaking, subtle structural distinctions determine how these units function, where they are installed, and which hardware fittings they require to operate smoothly.

Defining Cupboards and Cabinets in British Joinery

Historically, a cupboard was quite literally a board or side table used to display cups and tableware. Over time, it evolved to describe any enclosed storage space with shelves and doors, frequently built directly into the fabric of a building. An under-stairs storage area, a recessed alcove enclosure, or a full-height utility unit are classic examples of traditional British cupboards.

In contrast, a cabinet is typically a freestanding or modular piece of box-built casework (a carcass) constructed to precise dimensions. Kitchen wall units, base units, bathroom vanities, and glazed display furniture are all cabinets. The primary difference between a cabinet and a cupboard often comes down to this: cabinets tend to feature modular, standardised box construction designed for high-density storage and integrated internal hardware, whereas cupboards are often bespoke, built-in, or dedicated to general utility storage.

Hinge Selection for Cabinets vs Cupboards

The type of carcass dictates the hinge style required:

  • Cabinets: Modern modular cabinets almost universally use the 32 mm system with European-style concealed hinges. These require a standard 35 mm cup hole drilled into the back of the door. Concealed hinges allow for three-way adjustment (height, depth, and side-to-side), making them ideal for achieving consistent 2 mm to 3 mm gaps across a run of kitchen doors.
  • Cupboards: Built-in cupboards, face-frame units, and traditional utility joinery often use surface-mounted butt hinges, flush hinges, or pivot hinges. Because built-in alcove frames may not be perfectly square, these traditional hinges offer a simple mechanical pivot, though fine alignment must be planned during door fitting.

Catches, Latches, and Closing Mechanisms

Another practical difference between cabinets and cupboards lies in how the doors are held closed. Concealed cabinet hinges usually incorporate integrated sprung mechanisms or soft-close pistons, removing the need for secondary catches.

Built-in cupboards, however, typically rely on independent door hardware, such as:

  • Magnetic catches: Mounted to the carcass frame with a steel strike plate on the door, offering reliable hold for everyday linen or utility cupboards.
  • Roller and ball catches: Recessed into the door edge or frame, providing a tactile, positive mechanical click upon closing.
  • Touch latches (push-to-open): Used in modern handleless designs for both bespoke cupboards and minimalist cabinets.

Internal Storage and Runner Systems

Because cabinets rely on standardised internal widths (typically 300 mm to 1000 mm in 100 mm increments), they accommodate a vast array of purpose-made internal fittings. Soft-close drawer runners, pull-out wire baskets, carousel corner units, and internal waste bins are engineered specifically for standard cabinet carcass depths (usually 450 mm to 550 mm).

Cupboards, especially built-in alcoves or walk-in larder spaces, often have bespoke depths and irregular dimensions. For these spaces, hardware like heavy-duty shelf brackets, adjustable book-case strip systems (such as brass or steel Tonk strips), and surface-mounted sliding door tracks are far more practical than standard modular inserts.
