Unlike models that are simply screwed onto the base panel using basic wood screws, this system relies on an M10 threaded bolt engaging with a mating component inside the furniture carcass. Step-by-Step Guide: Fitting M10 Furniture Feet

Step 1: Mark the Positions

Turn the furniture unit upside down or lay it on its back. Protect the floor and the furniture unit with a blanket. Measure the positions for the drill holes. The distance to the outer edge is critical. If the hole is too close to the edge, the timber may split when screwing in the insert or under subsequent loads. An edge distance of 30 mm to 50 mm (measured from the centre of the hole to the edge) is generally ideal. Mark the drilling points with a pencil. For very wide units (from approx. 1000 mm width), a fifth foot placed centrally under the base is advisable to prevent sagging of the base panel.

Step 2: Determine Drilling Depth and Pre-drill

The length of the threaded insert determines the minimum drilling depth. Add about 2 mm to 3 mm to the length of the insert so that the threaded bolt of the furniture foot has enough clearance later if screwed in deeply. Set the depth stop on your drill accordingly. If you do not have a depth stop, wrap masking tape tightly around the bit at the required depth. Place the wood drill bit with its brad point precisely on the mark and drill perpendicularly into the material. Pull the drill bit out while the machine is running to clear the shavings cleanly.

Step 3: Countersink the Hole (Optional)

To prevent the top layer of the chipboard (melamine facing) or the wood from chipping when the insert is screwed in, you can chamfer the edges of the drill hole slightly using a countersink bit. A chamfer of 1 mm to 2 mm is completely sufficient.

Step 4: Drive in the Threaded Insert

Now anchor the internal thread into the wood. Driving in the insert must be done strictly vertically, just like laying the foundations for a house – if the base is skewed, the entire cabinet will stand at an angle later. Position the insert and screw it in slowly and with even pressure using the appropriate hex key. The insert should sit flush with the wood surface or a maximum of 1 mm deeper. Take care not to overtighten, otherwise the freshly cut thread in the wood will strip and the insert will lose its grip.

Step 5: Screw in the Furniture Feet

Now screw the threaded bolts of the furniture feet into the anchored inserts. Initially, screw the feet in fully until they stop. If you are using adjustable furniture feet, make sure the adjustment thread at the bottom of the foot is fully wound in (i.e. at its lowest setting).

Step 6: Stand the Unit Up and Level It

Place the furniture unit in its final position. Place the spirit level on the carcass (first lengthwise, then crosswise). Identify the lowest corner of the floor. This foot remains fully wound in. Now screw out the adjustment mechanisms of the other feet until the spirit level indicates an exactly horizontal position. This technique is particularly important when adjusting the kitchen run height, as worktops often need to join seamlessly.

Common Installation Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even with a seemingly straightforward installation, technical errors can occur that compromise the stability of the furniture.

  • Incorrect drill diameter: If the hole for the insert is drilled too small, the timber will split when screwing it in. If drilled too large, the insert will have no tensile hold and will pull out under lateral loads. Strictly follow the manufacturer specifications for the insert. An outer thread of 14 mm often requires a 12 mm drill bit in hardwood, whereas an 11.5 mm drill bit is sometimes sufficient in softwood.
  • Drilling at an angle: A hole not drilled at an exact 90° angle will cause the foot to sit crooked. With a foot height of 150 mm, a deviation of just 2° at the base leads to a visible offset of several millimetres at floor level. If in doubt, use a portable drill guide stand.
  • Ignoring a missing lock nut: Some M10 feet feature a lock nut at the upper end of the threaded bolt. After fitting and height adjustment, this must be tightened firmly against the base panel (or the insert) to lock the thread and prevent wobbling.

The M10 thread is a technical standard compatible with numerous designs. The choice of material and shape should depend on the location of use and the weight of the furniture.

For modern wall units or bathroom furniture, chrome furniture feet are frequently chosen as they resist corrosion and provide a sleek, technical appearance. In industrial furniture construction or with dark wood finishes such as Wotan oak, designers often opt for black furniture feet.

Regarding shape, square furniture feet offer a larger contact area against the carcass, slightly improving stability against lateral shear forces (e.g. when shifting a sofa).

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions About M10 Fitting

How much weight does an M10 thread support? A single steel M10 threaded bolt can theoretically support several hundred kilograms of vertical load. In practice, the weak point is almost always the timber fixing. A correctly fitted insert in solid timber supports around 50 kg to 100 kg per foot. In chipboard, pull-out resistance is lower.

What is the difference between M8 and M10 for furniture feet? The number designates the outer diameter of the thread in millimetres. M8 measures 8 mm, M10 measures 10 mm. Due to its larger cross-section, M10 offers greater bending stiffness and is used for heavy furniture (wardrobes, heavy sofas).
