Functional vs Decorative Fittings: Furniture Hardware Categories
A functional fitting ensures the mechanical mobility, stability, and connection of a piece of furniture, whilst a decorative fitting serves primarily for visual styling and tactile appeal. The first category includes hinges, drawer runner systems, and connecting fittings, whilst the second comprises furniture handles, knobs, and decorative trims. Both categories intertwine when visible components simultaneously perform mechanical and aesthetic tasks.
What is the Precise Difference?
In professional cabinet making and furniture construction, hardware is divided into two fundamental areas. The functional fitting is responsible purely for statics and kinematics. It often remains hidden or is designed to operate in the background. To use an anatomical analogy: functional fittings form the skeleton and joints of a cabinet, whilst decorative fittings represent the face.
A decorative fitting acts as the interface between the user and the furniture. It must be ergonomically tactile and complete the design of the front panels. Even though a handle is physically pulled, it is classed as decorative hardware, as the actual load distribution and guidance are handled by the functional components behind it.
Types and Variants of Functional Fittings
The diversity of functional components is defined by different motion sequences and installation requirements.
- Hinges: The concealed cup hinge is the standard for hinged doors. Depending on the position of the door relative to the carcase, a distinction is made between full overlay (corner stop), half overlay (twin stop for centre partitions), and inset (internal stop). Typical opening angles are 95°, 110°, or 155° to 165° for wide-angle hinges.
- Drawer Runner Systems: These guide drawers horizontally. A full extension runner pulls out 100% from the carcase, whilst a partial extension stops at approximately 75%. Technically, a distinction is made between simple roller runners, precise ball bearing slides (often side-mounted as telescopic slides), and concealed undermount runners.
- Connecting Technology: This includes the classic cam and dowel connector (e.g. Minifix) for flat-pack carcases, as well as threaded inserts and tee nuts for creating metric threads in engineered wood. Chipboard screws with PZ (Pozidriv) or TX (Torx) drives secure the components permanently.
- Furniture Locks: Surface-mounted locks, cylinder locks, or espagnolette locks are used to secure doors and drawers.
- Flap Fittings: A gas strut supports upward-opening flaps. The force is measured in Newtons (N).
Types and Variants of Decorative Fittings
- Furniture Handles: Formats range from individual knobs and classic bow handles to flush-fitted recessed handles.
- Hybrid Components: A furniture leg or plinth foot is structurally relevant (supporting weight, often height-adjustable via an M8 or M10 thread), but is frequently classified and styled as a decorative fitting due to its visibility.
- Cover Caps: These conceal screw heads or cam housings and are usually made of plastic in a matching wood colour or finish.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
Hardware compatibility is ensured through standardised dimensions. The System 32 standard is the foundation of European furniture manufacturing: the line boring features an exact spacing of 32 mm, with drill holes typically having a diameter of 3 mm or 5 mm.
A standard cup hinge requires a cup hole drilling of 35 mm (mini hinges require 26 mm). Drawer runners are typically manufactured in length increments ranging from 250 mm - 800 mm. For runner selection, the load capacity is also critical, typically amounting to 30 kg for standard slides and 45 kg or more for heavy-duty runners.
Application & Selection
When planning furniture, functional and decorative fittings are interdependent. If handleless fronts are desired (omitting decorative hardware), the functional fitting must be equipped with a push-to-open mechanism (tip-on). This pushes the door open mechanically.
Important for installation: push-to-open and soft-close (damping) are opposing mechanisms. A hinge with an integrated damper pulls the door gently shut over the final few centimetres; therefore, it cannot be combined with a touch catch, which would need to overcome this very closing force.
