A glass shelf support is a specialised fitting designed to hold glass shelves securely inside a furniture carcass, whilst a panel bracket secures heavier glass or timber panels to walls. Both variants use soft rubber buffers or suction cups to protect fragile materials from scratches and prevent them from shifting.
What exactly are glass shelf supports and panel brackets?
Unlike standard wooden shelves that often stay in place through their own weight or basic wooden dowels, glass requires friction-enhancing and cushioned support. Glass shelf supports fit into the pre-drilled hole line of the cabinet wall and provide a level resting surface.
The critical element in glass fittings is the separation between hard metal and brittle glass. This is achieved using rubber buffers, silicone rings, or integrated suction cups. A panel bracket, by contrast, is usually screwed directly into the wall and clamps the glass shelf from above and below. In workshop practice, it acts like a precision clamp that secures the glass pane without creating hazardous point loads.
Types and variants
Depending on the intended use and cabinet design, fitters distinguish between several styles:
- Plug-in pins with rubber rings: The standard choice for display cabinets. A cylindrical metal pin is inserted into the cabinet side panel, with the front section fitted with a rubber O-ring.
- Suction cup supports: Ideal for securing a glass top onto wooden structures. The suction cup creates a vacuum that holds the pane firmly onto the support, preventing horizontal pull-out.
- Clamping brackets (pelican type): These brackets grip the glass from both sides. They can be adjusted to the exact glass thickness using an adjusting screw on the underside.
- Angle brackets: L-shaped fittings where the glass rests on a longer arm, frequently secured with additional glass seals or plastic sleeves.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
During planning and installation, exact tolerances and load capacities must be observed:
- Drilling diameter: Most insert supports are standardised for System 32 and require a drilled hole of precisely 3 mm or 5 mm.
- Clamping range: Adjustable clamp brackets generally cover ranges of 4 mm - 8 mm or 8 mm - 12 mm.
- Load capacity: A standard glass shelf support made from die-cast zinc typically carries 15 kg - 20 kg per unit. With four supports (accounting for glass deflection), this yields an allowable total capacity sufficient for most display units. Heavy-duty panel brackets for wall shelving can support 30 kg and more when properly anchored with wall plugs into masonry.
Application & selection
Selecting the right fitting depends on dynamic load and the installation environment. For closed cabinets, standard pin supports are entirely sufficient. For open shelving where a glass panel might inadvertently be pulled forwards, clamping brackets or suction cup variants are essential.
If conventional chipboard or solid wood shelves are used instead of glass, fitters choose standard shelf supports, as timber does not require a protective rubber layer and classic supports frequently feature a locating pin that engages directly with the wooden shelf.
