Plinth Feet & Adjustable Legs: Definition, Adjustment Range & Function in Kitchen Cabinets

A plinth foot, often referred to during installation as an adjustable leg, is a height-adjustable component used for the exact alignment of carcass furniture, particularly kitchen cabinets. It compensates for uneven floors with millimetre precision, supports the static load of the furniture, and acts as a fixing point for the front plinth panel. Height adjustment is carried out via an integrated screw thread.

What is a plinth foot exactly?

A classic plinth foot for kitchen cabinets typically consists of three components: the mounting flange (the plate screwed underneath the cabinet base), the actual leg tube with an internal thread, and the adjustable glide. Rotating the glide extends or retracts the thread. Much like a vehicle chassis, this mechanism ensures that the carcass is positioned completely level, even if the screed or tiled floor in the room has a slope.

Exact levelling is essential, as the carcass will otherwise distort. A distorted cabinet prevents proper adjustment of front gap dimensions and causes heavily loaded kitchen cabinet pull-outs to block or rub against their runners.

Types and variants of adjustable legs

Depending on the intended application and visibility, fitters distinguish between different designs:

  • Concealed plastic plinth feet: The standard in kitchen construction. They are made of high-strength ABS plastic and are hidden behind a continuous plinth. A dedicated clip on the leg tube holds this plinth firmly in place.
  • Visible adjustable legs: When furniture is designed without a continuous plinth panel, visually appealing metal furniture legs or powder-coated black furniture legs are used. These also generally feature a small, integrated adjustment mechanism in the floor glide to level out minor irregularities.
  • Threaded feet: For lighter furniture or very minor height compensation, simple steel screws with a plastic base are used. These screw into a threaded insert or prong tee nut previously set into the carcass base (typically with an M8 or M10 thread).

Dimensions, standards, and adjustment range

In European kitchen construction, standard heights have been established to align with the ergonomics of the work surface. The most common nominal dimensions for the leg tube are 100 mm, 120 mm, and 150 mm.

The adjustment range indicates how far the leg can be wound in or out beyond its nominal dimension. A typical value is -10 mm / +20 mm. An adjustable leg with a nominal dimension of 100 mm can therefore be adjusted smoothly to a height between 90 mm and 120 mm.

The load capacity is a critical factor during planning. Kitchen cabinets support stone worktops, heavy electrical appliances, and fully loaded internal storage systems such as a kitchen waste separation bin or densely packed kitchen drawer organisers. A set of four standard plastic plinth feet therefore usually offers a static load capacity of 400 kg to 500 kg.

Installation and positioning on the kitchen cabinet

Fixing the flange to the base panel is typically carried out using specialised chipboard screws (often measuring 4 x 15 mm). Many flanges also feature a central dowel pin (usually 10 mm or 15 mm in diameter) that is pressed into a corresponding pre-drilled hole in the base. This absorbs shear forces when the cabinet is slid during installation.

The positioning of the front feet is set slightly back from the edge. A setback of 50 mm - 70 mm from the front edge of the carcass is standard. This clearance creates the toe kick area for users standing at the worktop.

Accessories: plinth clips and adaptors

An essential component of the plinth foot system is the attachment of the front plinth panel. A plinth clip is used for this purpose. This clip is either screwed onto the rear of the wooden or plastic plinth or slid into a pre-routed groove. The plinth panel with the clips attached is then simply pressed onto the round tubes of the front adjustable legs. This enables tool-free removal of the plinth, for instance to clean the area beneath the cabinets or to route cables and pipes.

For hard-to-reach rear feet, specialised adjustment tools exist that can be inserted from the front beneath the cabinet, transferring the rotational movement to the rear foot via an angular gear.
