Pronged Tee Nut vs. Screw-in Threaded Insert: Furniture Connectors in Detail
A pronged tee nut is hammered into timber with prongs and secures metric bolts against tensile load, whereas a screw-in threaded insert is turned into a pre-drilled hole using an external thread. Both components create a heavy-duty, reusable internal metric thread in wooden materials, but they differ fundamentally in their installation method and primary load direction.
What exactly are pronged tee nuts and screw-in threaded inserts?
When components in furniture construction need to be dismantled frequently or must withstand particularly high tensile forces, conventional wood screws reach their limits. In such cases, specialised furniture connectors are used to provide a metric thread within the timber-based material. They act as a metallic anchor in the soft wood, preventing the bolt from tearing out under load.
The pronged tee nut consists of a cylindrical sleeve with an internal thread and a flat flange. This flange usually features four pointed prongs. The fitting is inserted into a through-hole from the rear of the workpiece and hammered flush into the timber. When a metric bolt is tightened from the front, the prongs pull even deeper into the material.
The screw-in threaded insert (also technically known as an insert nut or threaded insert) possesses a coarse, self-tapping external thread for wood and an internal metric thread. It is driven directly into a pre-drilled hole using a hexagon socket (hex key) or a slotted screwdriver.
Types and variants of furniture connectors
Both systems feature specific designs depending on their field of application:
- Pronged tee nuts: The standard design features four prongs. For very hard timbers or machine press-in processes, there are also prong-free variants that are knurled instead. They are generally manufactured from steel blanks that are zinc-plated to prevent corrosion.
- Threaded inserts: These are available with or without a flange (collar). A flange prevents the insert from being driven too deeply into the wood and ensures a neat finish. Screw-in inserts are mostly produced from steel, brass, or die-cast zinc.
Dimensions, standards, and typical values
When working with these fittings, precise drill holes are crucial. The dimension specifications refer primarily to the internal metric thread, typically M4, M5, M6, M8, or M10.
- Drill hole for pronged tee nuts: The drill diameter corresponds to the outer diameter of the sleeve. For an M8 pronged tee nut, a drill hole of 9 mm or 10 mm is usually required.
- Drill hole for screw-in threaded inserts: Here, the core diameter of the external thread without the thread crests is decisive. For an M8 threaded insert with an outer diameter of 14 mm, pre-drilling is usually 11 mm to 12 mm in softwood, and 12 mm to 12.5 mm in hardwood.
- Lengths: The fittings are available in lengths from 8 mm to 30 mm. The length must be matched to the material thickness of the chipboard or solid timber.
Unlike classic wood screws and furniture screws that cut directly into the material, these connectors always require matching metric bolts. If you only need to fix lightweight back panels or small fittings, standard wood screws 4mm without an additional internal thread are often sufficient.
Application and selection: when to use which component?
The choice between the two systems depends on workpiece accessibility and the primary direction of force.
Pronged tee nuts strictly require a through-hole, as they are installed on the reverse side of the material (opposite to the direction of pull). They offer exceptionally high pull-out resistance and are typically used for mounting furniture legs, climbing wall holds, or in loudspeaker cabinet construction.
Screw-in threaded inserts demonstrate their strengths when the rear of the workpiece is inaccessible or must remain undamaged for aesthetic reasons. They are ideal for blind holes (holes that do not pass fully through). A classic example is mounting table legs to a solid tabletop. To visually conceal fixings in open designs, self-adhesive wood cover caps can be applied over the bolt heads after assembly.
