When building or modifying a wardrobe, optimising the closing mechanism of doors and pull-outs is a frequent requirement. Carcasses such as the well-known Pax wardrobe are often supplied with standard, unsprung or undamped hinges. When doors slam loudly or existing dampers show signs of wear after years of use, replacing the fittings becomes necessary. This technical guide explains the requirements for retrofitting soft-close components as a precise alternative or replacement for IKEA Pax.

What to Consider Regarding Compatibility

For a new hinge or damper to fit IKEA Pax, the drilling patterns and routings in the carcass and door must match the hardware specifications exactly. Furniture manufacturing adheres to strict industrial standards in this regard.

System 32 and Hole Spacing

The Pax wardrobe carcass is manufactured according to System 32. This means the pre-drilled holes in the side panels have a vertical spacing of exactly 32 mm from one another. The standard distance from the front edge of the carcass to the centre of the first row of holes is 37 mm. The cruciform mounting plate of the new hinge must be designed precisely for this hole pattern.

Hinge Cup Drilling and Overlay Type

Pax system doors feature circular routings on the inner face to accommodate the concealed cup hinge.

  • Cup diameter: The standard drilling measures 35 mm.
  • Cup depth: The recess is typically 11.5 mm to 12 mm deep.
  • Overlay type: Pax doors sit on the front edges of the carcass side panels when closed. For this setup, a hinge designed for a full overlay is strictly required. An inset hinge would cause the door to sit inside the carcass opening.

Suitable Components for Retrofitting

Depending on whether the entire fitting is being replaced or only the damping function is being added, various technical solutions compatible with the Pax system are available.

1. Full Replacement: Concealed Hinges with Integrated Damping

The cleanest technical solution is replacing the old concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with models featuring a factory-fitted hydraulic cylinder inside the hinge arm. The hydraulic cylinder absorbs the kinetic energy of the closing door, just like a vehicle suspension shock absorber. For standard wardrobe doors, concealed hinges / cabinet hinges with damping (soft close) are ideal. The typical opening angle for straight wardrobe doors is 110°. For this purpose, concealed hinges / cabinet hinges 110 degrees are used.

2. Add-On Solutions: Clip-On Dampers and Door Buffers

If the existing hinges are to remain in place, the soft-close function can be added separately. Clip-on dampers are attached directly to the hinge arm of the existing concealed hinge, provided the hinge design supports this mounting. Alternatively, standalone door dampers or buffers & dampers can be drilled into the carcass side or screwed to the internal side panel using an adapter plate system. These catch the door just before it closes.

3. Converting Drawers to Soft-Close

Internal drawers can also be modified. When sourcing runners compatible with Komplement drawers (the internal system for Pax), the exact carcass depth (usually 58 cm or 35 cm) must be observed. Replacing the runners requires drawer runners with damping. To make the entire storage space accessible right into the back corners, using full extension drawer runners is recommended, allowing the drawer to extend 100% out of the carcass.

Installation and Retrofitting: Step-by-Step Guide

Installing replacement fittings on existing carcasses requires precision. Follow a systematic approach when converting the hinges.

Step-by-step process:

  1. Dismantling: Detach the door from the carcass. On modern clip-on hinges, simply press the release catch at the rear end of the hinge arm. Then, unscrew the old concealed hinges from the 35 mm door cup holes using the PZ2 screwdriver.
  2. Fitting the new concealed hinges: Insert the new soft-close hinges into the routings. Ensure they sit at an exact 90° angle to the door edge, then tighten the fixing screws.
  3. Replacing mounting plates: Remove the old mounting plates from the carcass and screw the new plates into the existing 5 mm holes along the 32 mm hole pattern.
  4. Hanging the door: Position the door against the carcass and press the hinge arm onto the mounting plate until the mechanism clicks audibly into place.
  5. Fine adjustment: Use the three adjustment screws on the hinge arm to align the door reveals. Adjust the height, lateral overlay, and depth so the door hangs parallel to the carcass with uniform gaps.

How many soft-close hinges do I need per door? On a standard Pax door (height 201 cm, using 3 to 4 hinges), equipping two of the hinges with soft-close damping is generally sufficient. If all four hinges are damped, the closing resistance on lighter doors may be too high, preventing the door from shutting completely.

Can I combine soft-close with push-to-open? No. The two mechanisms work against each other. A soft-close damper pulls the door shut over the final few centimetres and holds it closed. A push-to-open system (tip-on) relies on a spring-loaded ejection mechanism and strictly requires undamped hinges; otherwise, the door cannot pop open.

Which dimension is critical when selecting replacement hinges? The decisive factors are the 35 mm cup diameter and the overlay type (full overlay). The screw hole spacing beside the cup (typically 45 mm or 52 mm) is secondary, as new pilot holes can easily be made using wood screws.
