Roller Runners vs Ball Bearing Runners — What Is the Difference?

The main difference between a roller runner and a ball bearing runner lies in the mechanics and maximum load capacity: A roller runner moves on plastic rollers, is usually designed as a single extension (partial extension), and is suitable for light to medium loads. A ball bearing runner uses a telescopic system with steel balls, generally provides full extension, and supports significantly higher weights.

What Is the Exact Difference?

Both systems serve to guide drawers within a cabinet carcase, but they differ fundamentally in their structural design.

The roller runner consists of two asymmetrical profiles made of powder-coated steel. A plastic roller (usually nylon or POM) is attached to each profile. When opening the drawer, the roller on the drawer profile runs inside the track of the cabinet profile and vice versa. The system is simple, robust, and tolerates slight dimensional inaccuracies in carcase construction. The drawer can be removed entirely by lifting it slightly at the extension limit.

The ball bearing runner works like a precision rolling bearing in a gearbox. It consists of multiple interlocking steel profiles (telescopic runners) between which small steel balls move inside a ball cage. This construction ensures play-free, exact lateral guidance and a smooth run, even under heavy loads. The drawer is securely connected to the runner and can usually only be removed using a release lever (disconnect lever) on the runner.

Types and Variants

The respective mechanics result in different functional options for furniture making:

  • Extension length: Due to their design, roller runners are almost always a partial extension. This means that around 25 % of the drawer remains inside the carcase when fully opened. Ball bearing runners, on the other hand, are mostly manufactured as full extension drawer runners, allowing the drawer to be pulled out of the piece of furniture by 100 %.
  • Additional mechanisms: With ball bearing runners, complex functions can be integrated into the profile. These include soft-close drawer runners, which brake the momentum during closing and pull the drawer in gently. The exact opposite is push to open drawer runners (tip-on), where pressing the handleless front ejects the drawer. Roller runners do not feature these mechanisms as standard, but often have a slight slope at the rear end of the track, which acts as a simple gravity-assisted self-closing mechanism.

Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values

Exact dimensions and load limits are crucial for assembly in the workshop or furniture construction.

  • Lengths: Both systems cover common carcase depths. Nominal lengths typically range from 250 mm - 800 mm. Frequently used standard dimensions include 450 mm drawer runners or 500 mm drawer runners.
  • Load capacity: A standard roller runner carries around 15 kg to 25 kg. Ball bearing runners usually start at 30 kg to 45 kg. For tool cabinets or large pull-outs, heavy-duty drawer runners are used, handling load capacities of 80 kg, 130 kg, or more.
  • Installation clearance: This is the space strictly required between the drawer side and the inner carcase wall. Ball bearing runners usually require an exact lateral installation clearance of 12.7 mm (equivalent to half an inch). Roller runners typically require 12.5 mm, depending on the manufacturer.

Usage & Selection

The choice of runner depends on the intended use, drawer weight, and budget.

Roller drawer runners are the standard solution for lightweight desk drawers, keyboard trays, or simple chests of drawers. They are quick to fit and resistant to dust.

Ball bearing runners are the technical standard for heavy kitchen drawers, wide living room units, or workshop fittings. They are the right choice when complete access to the rear section of the drawer (full extension) is required or when handleless fronts need to be achieved.
