The main difference between roller runners and ball bearing runners lies in their mechanism and load capacity: roller runners glide on plastic rollers and are usually designed as single extension runners for light loads. Ball bearing runners use steel ball bearings in a telescopic profile, frequently allow full extension, and carry significantly higher weights as heavy-duty runners.
What Are Roller Runners and Ball Bearing Runners Exactly?
The mechanism of a drawer runner significantly determines the running action, lateral stability, and weight capacity of a drawer.
With a roller runner, the system consists of two epoxy-coated steel profiles. A plastic roller is fixed to each profile. The roller on the cabinet profile runs inside the drawer profile and vice versa. During installation, one profile is screwed to the interior cabinet side wall, whilst the other is fitted to the lower edge of the drawer side. The system features a simple design and allows the drawer to be completely removed from the cabinet by lifting it slightly at the front. Because the runner is only positively guided on one side, very wide drawers may experience slight lateral play.
A ball bearing runner, on the other hand, is based on a more complex telescopic principle. Between the inner, intermediate, and outer rail profiles sits a ball cage filled with small steel ball bearings. The rails interlock firmly, and mounting typically takes place centrally along the drawer side. The system operates like a play-free precision mechanism – the load is distributed evenly across many small contact points. Thanks to the enclosed cage, the runner is positively guided on both sides, which makes jamming almost impossible and guarantees extremely high lateral stability.
Design Types and Variations
The differing construction types result in specific extension formats and additional features for furniture making:
- Extension length: Roller runners are almost always a single extension (partial extension), where around 25 % of the drawer remains inside the cabinet. Ball bearing runners are generally designed as full extension runners, allowing the drawer box to be pulled out 100 %.
- Additional mechanisms: Modern ball bearing runners can be fitted with various convenience features. A runner with soft-close (damping) cushions the closing momentum and pulls the drawer gently shut over the final centimetres. The exact opposite is push-to-open (tip-on): here, a spring mechanism pushes the handleless drawer open as soon as pressure is applied to the front. These two mechanisms are structurally opposing and cannot be combined in the same runner.

Fixing to the cabinet is typically done via the System 32 grid, where drill holes are spaced at intervals of 32 mm. For fixing, the installer uses chipboard screws (PZ or TX drive) with a diameter of 3.5 mm to 4 mm, or special Euro screws.
- Installation gap (side clearance requirement): Roller runners almost always require exactly 12.5 mm of space per side between the drawer and the cabinet wall. Depending on their load rating, ball bearing runners also require 12.5 mm (standard) or up to 19 mm for heavy-duty versions.
- Lengths: Both systems are available in standard increments, typically in the range of 250 mm - 800 mm. For small bathroom units or desk pedestals, drawer runners 250 mm or drawer runners 400 mm are often sufficient. In standard kitchen manufacturing, drawer runners 500 mm are frequently used. For deep workshop cabinets, drawer runners 600 mm are selected.

For lightweight desk drawers, simple bedroom chests of drawers, or keyboard pull-outs, roller runners are often the most economical solution. They require little maintenance, are insensitive to dust, and tolerate slight dimensional discrepancies in the cabinet carcass.
For kitchen drawers holding pots and plates, workshop trolleys, or wide sideboards, ball bearing runners are essential. Only they provide the necessary torsional rigidity for heavy contents. Anyone needing full access to the entire drawer contents right to the back corner should choose drawer runners full extension. If the drawer needs to close silently, the joiner opts for drawer runners with soft close. For minimalist, handleless fronts, drawer runners push to open are installed instead.
