Roller Runners vs Ball Bearing Runners: Definition, Differences & Load Capacity
Roller runners rely on plastic wheels and are predominantly used as single-extension slides for light to medium loads. Ball bearing runners are telescopic systems made of steel profiles with integrated ball bearings, available as full or single extension, offering significantly higher load capacities, precise lateral stability, and diverse additional functions.
What is the precise technical difference?
The fundamental distinction between both systems lies in how friction is reduced and the overall profile construction.
With roller runners, two epoxy-coated steel profiles slide over one another. Movement is facilitated by plastic rollers (typically polyamide or POM). The system features an open construction: the drawer profile simply rests on the cabinet profile. Consequently, the drawer can be unhooked and removed merely by lifting it when open.
Ball bearing runners, on the other hand, consist of interlocking telescopic rails. Hardened steel balls sit in a ball cage between the profiles. This design mechanically locks the rails together. The ball bearing runner functions like a play-free linear bearing in industrial engineering: it guides movement precisely and prevents lateral wobbling of the drawer. To remove the drawer, a small release lever on the runner usually needs to be operated.
Load capacity, dimensions, and standards
The choice of runner depends primarily on the weight of the loaded drawer and the available installation space.
- Load capacity: Standard drawer runners roller runners are designed for dynamic loads from 15 kg up to a maximum of 25 kg. Ball bearing runners typically start at 30 kg to 45 kg. For workshop trolleys or deep larder units, heavy duty drawer runners are used, handling load capacities of 80 kg, 136 kg, or more.
- Installation clearance (side space requirement): Roller runners generally require an installation gap of 12.5 mm per side. Ball bearing runners standardly require 12.7 mm (equivalent to half an inch) or, more rarely, 17 mm when fitted into a grooved channel routed into the drawer side.
- Nominal lengths: Both systems are available in standardised lengths based on the System 32 grid. Roller runners typically cover the range from drawer runners 250 mm to 600 mm. Ball bearing runners offer greater versatility, manufactured from short 250 mm variants through medium drawer runners 500 mm up to extra-long drawer runners 800 mm.
Extension types: Full extension vs single extension
The construction type determines how far the drawer can be pulled out from the cabinet.
- Single extension (partial extension): The drawer can be pulled out to roughly 75% to 80% of its depth. The rear section remains inside the cabinet, making access to items at the back more difficult. Roller runners are, by design, almost always single extension.
- Full extension: The drawer can be pulled out 100% clear of the cabinet carcass. The drawer box sits flush with the front edge of the cabinet. This is achieved in ball bearing runners via a three-part telescopic mechanism. A drawer runner full extension offers complete access to the entire storage space.
Additional functions and mechanics
While roller runners stand out for their simplicity, ball bearing runners offer room for integrated motion mechanisms.
- Self-closing: In simple roller runners, this is achieved by an angled incline at the rear of the profile (drawer runners with self-closing). The drawer rolls shut over the final centimetres powered by gravity.
- Damping: A drawer runner with soft close (also referred to as soft-close) absorbs the momentum of the closing drawer using a hydraulic damper, pulling it shut gently and silently.
- Opening support: For handleless fronts, a drawer runner push to open (also known as tip-on) is fitted. Pressing the front releases a tensioned spring that pushes the drawer slightly open. Soft-close and push-to-open are mechanically opposing functions and are generally mutually exclusive on standard ball bearing runners.
Usage & Selection
For simple office furniture, keyboard pull-outs, or lightweight chests of drawers, roller runners are often fully sufficient and offer the benefit of quick, tool-free removal. However, as soon as heavy cookware in the kitchen, tools in the garage, or wide drawer fronts in the living room are planned, ball bearing runners are essential to prevent jamming and to support the load safely.
