Sliding Guides for Extending Tables: Definition & Function of Table Fittings

A sliding guide is a specialised table fitting for extending tables that enables the precise pulling apart of the table top halves. It consists of interlocking profiles that form a sturdy guiding line and allow extension leaves to be inserted in the centre of the table without the structure sagging under load.

What exactly is a sliding guide?

The sliding guide works on the telescopic principle. It is mounted concealed beneath the table top and connects the fixed table base (the apron or frame) with the movable table top halves. When pulling at the end of the table, the rail profiles slide out within one another. This creates the necessary clearance in the centre for the extension leaves.

High-quality versions are made of galvanised steel or aluminium and use ball-bearing profiles that guarantee smooth running. Much like a railway track that keeps a train precisely on course, the slide prevents the heavy table tops from jamming or tilting during movement. Tension catches or an integrated locking mechanism are often used to secure the table in the closed or opened state, preventing the leaves from accidentally drifting apart.

Types and variants of table guides

Depending on the construction of the table, different mechanisms are used:

  • Asynchronous extension: Both table top halves can be moved independently of each other. Here, the fitter installs simple, separate pairs of runners.
  • Synchronous extension: Thanks to an integrated cable pull system, both sides open simultaneously and symmetrically when pulling only one side.
  • End extension: The guide sits at the end face of the table. The main top remains rigid, whilst the legs and frame are pulled out at one end.
  • Centre extension: The standard for tables with a fixed four-legged frame. The table tops split exactly in the middle.

Typical dimensions and technical values

When planning and fitting by the joiner, the following parameters of the table fittings are crucial:

  • Installation length: The length of the runner when completely closed. Standard dimensions for common tables are between 600 mm - 1200 mm.
  • Extension length: Indicates how far the table can be extended. Typical values are 400 mm, 500 mm, or for multiple extensions on large dining tables up to 1500 mm.
  • Load capacity: Depending on profile thickness and material composition, a robust steel guide supports between 50 kg and 120 kg.
  • Profile height: Frequently between 35 mm and 50 mm, in order to sit as flat as possible under the table top and not restrict legroom.

Application & selection

The choice of the suitable sliding guide depends significantly on the sub-construction of the table. A pedestal table requires a different load distribution than a classic apron table with four legs, because on a pedestal table the runner must absorb the entire load of the cantilevered top ends.

For heavy solid wood tops, the load capacity of the runners must be sized appropriately high to prevent sagging of the insert leaves. For smooth operation on wide and heavy tables, a synchronous extension is always recommended, as it mechanically prevents one-sided jamming by the user.
