Threaded Insert vs Screw-In Nut: Wood Thread Types Explained
Screw-in nuts and threaded inserts are fastening elements for furniture construction that create a durable metric internal thread in softer materials such as solid wood, chipboard, or MDF. Whilst the classic screw-in nut features a coarse, self-tapping external thread and is driven into a pre-drilled hole, the term threaded insert also encompasses variants designed for hammering in, pressing in, or expanding.
What Are Screw-In Nuts and Threaded Inserts Exactly?
Wood materials do not offer sufficient holding power for metric machine screws when the connection is subject to heavy loads or frequent dismantling. A Threaded insert solves this structural issue. It acts as a mechanical adapter: the coarse external thread or retaining prongs anchor the component securely into the timber, whilst the precise metallic internal thread accepts the actual machine screw.
Much like a heavy-duty wall plug in a concrete wall, the insert grips deeply into the softer base material and distributes tensile and shear forces over a substantially larger surface area. This prevents the fixing from tearing out under load.
Types and Variants of Wood Threads
Depending on the requirements, tensile load, and base material, different designs are utilised in furniture and fixture construction:
- Screw-in nut (often also referred to as a Rampa insert): This variant possesses a sharp, self-tapping external thread. It is typically driven into an accurately pre-drilled hole using a hexagon socket or a slotted screwdriver.
- Pronged tee nut: This design features a flat flange with four pointed prongs. It is driven into the drilled hole from the rear of the workpiece. As the metric bolt is tightened, the prongs draw themselves deep into the wood. Suitable components can be found under Tee nuts.
- Expanding insert: An insert made of plastic or brass that expands within the drilled hole when the screw is inserted, pressing firmly against the internal wall.
Dimensions, Standards, and Typical Values
During installation, two diameters are critical: the metric internal thread and the external diameter required for drilling.
- Common internal threads: M4, M5, M6, M8, and M10. An M6 insert is the industry standard for securing furniture legs or assembling cabinet carcases.
- Lengths: Typical installation sizes range from 8 mm - 30 mm. The length must strictly correspond to the material thickness (e.g. 16 mm or 19 mm in standard chipboard) to avoid piercing the surface.
- Pre-drilling diameter: This depends on the core diameter of the screw-in nut as well as the hardness of the timber. For soft softwood, the drill diameter is chosen to be slightly smaller than for hard solid wood or MDF, ensuring the material does not split during insertion.
Application and Selection
The decision between direct screwing and a metric threaded insert depends primarily on the design. For permanent, static joints that will not be dismantled, traditional Wood screws and furniture screws are generally sufficient. However, if furniture needs to be demountable (such as beds, tables, or large wardrobes), metal inserts are essential, as a direct thread cut into timber wears out after repeated assembly and disassembly.
Where delicate connections are required and inserts would be too large for the material thickness, fitters turn to slim direct fixings, such as 4mm wood screws.
For visually demanding joints in visible areas where metric screw heads might look unsightly, the screw pattern can be concealed flush with Self-adhesive wooden cover caps. Alternatively, for direct wood fixings, Black wood screws can be utilised to create a deliberate visual contrast.
