T-Nuts vs. Screw-In Threaded Inserts: Furniture Threaded Inserts (M4 to M10) Explained

T-nuts and screw-in threaded inserts are threaded components designed to create a metric internal thread in wood-based materials. While the pronged T-nut is secured from the reverse side by driving its barbed prongs into the material, the screw-in insert cuts itself into the pre-drilled hole using a coarse external thread.

What exactly are threaded inserts for furniture?

When components need to be dismantled frequently or have to withstand strong tensile forces, standard chipboard screws reach their limits. A threaded insert acts as an adapter: it anchors firmly into solid wood or chipboard and provides a robust metric machine thread. The principle is similar to a wall plug, but engineered specifically for woodworking. This allows metric bolts to be screwed in and undone as often as necessary without stripping the wooden thread or losing holding power.

T-nut vs. screw-in threaded insert: The variants in detail

Although both components serve the same fundamental purpose, they differ significantly in construction and installation.

Pronged T-nut (tee nut)

The pronged T-nut consists of a sleeve with an internal thread and a flat flange featuring typically four sharp prongs. Installation is always carried out from the side opposite to the tensile load. The nut is inserted into a through-hole and driven flush into the wood with a hammer. When a bolt is inserted from the front side and tightened, the prongs of the T-nuts are pulled even deeper and more securely into the material.

Screw-in insert (threaded sleeve)

The screw-in threaded insert is a cylindrical or slightly tapered insert with a coarse, self-cutting external thread and a metric internal thread. It is screwed into a pre-drilled blind hole or through-hole – typically using a hex key (Allen key) or a specialised insert driving tool. This variant, which belongs to the wider group of furniture connectors, is strictly necessary when the reverse side of the workpiece is inaccessible or when edge-face fastening is required.

Dimensions, standards, and typical specifications

When planning furniture designs, both the internal thread size and the correct drill diameter must be taken into account.

  • Internal thread: In furniture construction, the sizes M4, M5, M6, M8, and M10 are standard.
  • Component length: Inserts are typically available in lengths from 8 mm to 25 mm, depending on the material thickness of the substrate board (usually 16 mm or 19 mm chipboard).
  • Drill hole diameter for T-nuts: The drill hole must correspond to the outer diameter of the sleeve. For an M8 thread, pre-drilling is usually carried out at 9 mm to 10 mm.
  • Drill hole diameter for screw-in inserts: Here, the diameter depends heavily on the hardness of the wood. For an insert with an M6 internal thread and a 12 mm external thread, the pre-drilling diameter in soft softwood is 10 mm, whilst in hard oak or multiplex plywood boards it is typically 10.5 mm to 11 mm.

Practical application and selection

Selecting the right insert determines the overall stability of the structure. If heavy cabinets are to be mounted on height-adjustable furniture legs, a pronged T-nut installed from the inside of the base panel is recommended. The downward gravitational force of the furniture presses the flange even tighter against the board.

For concealed joints on shelving units or when attaching fittings to thick tabletops, the screw-in threaded insert is the technically superior, cleaner solution.

If permanent, non-dismountable fixings without metric threads are required instead, fitters rely on direct wood screws and furniture screws. For fitting standard hinges or drawer runners, PZ2 wood screws with a diameter of 3.5 mm or 4 mm are generally sufficient. Visible screw heads inside the cabinet carcass can be neatly concealed with matching self-adhesive screw cover caps in a suitable wood-effect finish.
