What is Blumotion? Damping Systems & Compatible Soft-Close Hinges (Blum Alternatives)

Blumotion is the proprietary brand name of the manufacturer Blum for an integrated damping system that ensures gentle and silent closing of furniture doors, flaps, and drawers. In generic hardware engineering, this function is referred to as soft-close or damping, hydraulically or pneumatically braking the kinetic energy of the closing movement.

What exactly is Blumotion and how does damping work?

Technically, the term describes a linear or rotary furniture damper that acts upon the motion sequence of a fitting. Much like a shock absorber on a car, the cylinder slows down the movement of the door just before it hits the cabinet carcass. The system converts kinetic energy into heat via a viscous medium (usually silicone oil) or a gas pressure system. This prevents the cabinet front from slamming hard against the unit. If standard furniture is not fitted with this function, universal buffers & dampers can often be retrofitted as clip-on or drill-in solutions.

Types of damping systems in furniture hardware

The principle of damping is found in various furniture fittings, whether using original systems or brand-independent alternatives:

  • Integrated hinge damping: The damping cylinder sits invisibly within the hinge arm or hinge cup. Such concealed cabinet hinges with damping (Soft Close) are today's standard in modern cabinetmaking.
  • Clip-on dampers: A separate component that is clipped onto the cruciform mounting plate or the concealed hinge after installation.
  • Runner systems: For drawers, a catch mechanism in the runner system ensures that the extension is braked over the final few centimetres and pulled gently shut. This is integrated directly into drawer runners with damping.

Dimensions, standards, and typical values for soft-close hinges

When a defective hinge needs replacing, the brand is secondary as long as the technical parameters match. A concealed cup hinge generally requires a drilled hole with a diameter of 35 mm (rarely 26 mm for very small doors).

Choosing the correct hinge depends on the opening angle and the type of overlay:

  • Standard angle: For standard cupboard doors, 110-degree concealed cabinet hinges are most commonly used.
  • Wide-angle hinges: For internal drawers or corner cabinets, opening angles of 155° or 165° are required.
  • Crank / Overlay type: A strict distinction is made between full overlay (the door fully covers the carcass side), half overlay / dual (two doors share a central partition), and inset (the door sits flush inside the carcass).

For joiners and installers looking for an economical and technically equivalent solution, brand-independent soft-close fittings are an ideal choice. When replacing fittings in kitchen cupboards or wardrobes, it is sufficient to determine the cup diameter and the overlay type. Standard concealed cabinet hinges with integrated damping can be adjusted three-dimensionally via eccentric screws to achieve a precise gap pattern.

Important during planning: Soft-close must never be confused with push-to-open (or tip-on). While damping slows down and pulls the door shut, a push-to-open system pushes the handleless door open upon pressing. Both mechanisms physically work against one another and cannot be combined within a single hinge.
