Wide-Angle Hinge: What Is It and When Is It Used?
A wide-angle hinge is a specialised concealed cup hinge that provides an opening angle from at least 155° up to 170°. Unlike standard hinges, the opened door swings completely clear of the internal cabinet opening. This allows internal drawers to be pulled out without any collision.
What exactly is a wide-angle hinge?
Technically speaking, this fitting is a concealed cup hinge featuring an extended multi-pivot mechanism. The decisive technical advantage is the so-called zero protrusion. This means that when the cabinet door is fully open, the edge of the door no longer extends into the clear width of the carcass opening.
For the hole drilled into the door, a standard 35 mm cup drilling is generally required, making these fittings compatible with standard concealed cup hinges 35 mm. Mounting to the carcass is achieved via a cruciform mounting plate, which in modern systems connects to the hinge arm without tools using a clip-on mechanism.
Typical opening angles and dimensions
Whilst a classic furniture hinge stops at an angle between 95° and 110°, the range of wide-angle hinges begins considerably higher. The exact choice of angle depends on the room geometry and cabinet contents.
- Concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges 155 degrees: The common standard for larder units with internal pull-outs.

Typical use cases in furniture construction:
- Larder units (larder cabinets with individual pull-outs): When drawers are fitted behind the cabinet door, the wide opening angle prevents the side of the drawer from rubbing against the inside of the door.
- Corner units: Combined with a corner cabinet carousel fitting, wide opening angles allow the carousel shelves to pivot out smoothly without the door obstructing the path.
Overlay types and features
As with all concealed cup hinges / cabinet hinges, the overlay situation of the door must also be considered with wide-angle models. The geometry varies depending on the position of the door relative to the carcass side:
- Full overlay: The door completely covers the front edge of the carcass side when closed. Concealed cup hinges full overlay are selected for this.
- Half overlay: Two doors share a single partition wall, so each covers only half of the side edge. Concealed cup hinges half overlay are used here.
- Inset: The door sits flush inside the carcass opening between the cabinet sides. Concealed cup hinges inset are required for this configuration.
Because doors on larder units or large corner solutions often carry considerable weight, the closing mechanism is an essential factor. A damper integrated into the hinge cup or hinge arm smoothly cushions the closing motion just before the door contacts the carcass.
